(my sister liked cold mist better, i like warm mist better so i guess thats a matter of choice)
i don't put any type of medication in mine, i just run it for the dryness in the house.
i'm not sure what you mean by "deep down cough" but i get choking because my cough is unproductive.
i (personal opinion) think the humidifier helps me by loosening the secretions---also i have found that keeping well hydrated helps loosen secretions so i develop a more productive cough.
Be careful not to raise he humidity to much. because it can start mildew, unless you leave your door open a bit.
My daughter used a vaporizer for the baby for several days, in a closed bedroom, and later we found mildew, because it was a dark, closed off room, and yes, we knew better!!!

I use cool mist humidifiers. Keeping the humidity level at a comfortable 40% not only helps my breathing, a recent research publication stated higher humidity (40%) inactivates cold and flu viruses.

However, humidity that is too high is not good. It is important to keep humidifiers clean due to mold and mildew. In winter my house is too dry.
I prefer humidifiers without a filter. I use Safety First (tabletop) humidifiers. I got mine at Target.

I do not use a vaporizer and haven't in years. When I lived up north we ran a humidifier constantly during the winter months. But now that I live in Florida, humidity has not been an issue, we have plenty. Also my doctor has never suggested it, but if he did, I would. Take care, Bill
