Very interesting, I get up 3-4 times a night and here I thought it was the liquids I drank during the day..maybe not..I will ask the Doc. Thanks for posting.

I have noticed that when I'm in the middle of a 'breathing thing' I sometimes really have to go. Kind of difficult to be PLBing & hold at the same time. We actually talked about this in rehab. Wonder what causes it. It's scary cause I know when people die their bodies evacuate, scary:>O

i was astonished to discover that UI was directly related to a pinched nerve in the lower back caused by an herniated disk~! whenever the Physical Therapy relieves the pressure on that nerve, the incontinence, or sudden urge,, is greatly reduced. and here i thought it was from obesity~~ :o

Incontinence can probably be caused by a variety of things. It's my feeling when it is associated with COPD, it may be the lack of oxygen our bodies experience - which is even less while an exacerbation is going on. Then too, as we grow older our bladder isn't able to hold as much as it once did.

Whatever the reason, I find I now cross my legs when I sneeze.

Abstract

This study investigated urinary incontinence in men with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). A total of 244 community-dwelling men (mean age 66.5 years) diagnosed with COPD within the past 4 years were recruited from six hospital outpatient departments in central Japan. The prevalence of urinary incontinence was 10% according to the International Consultation on Incontinence criterion. Urine leakage among the 24 incontinent men was typically a small amount (75%) and occurred once a week or less often (58%). Fifteen (63%) of them reported urge incontinence while only two men experienced stress incontinence. On average they had urine leakage for 2.5 (SD 2.3) years and the majority (n = 19, 79%) developed the condition after diagnosis of COPD. The finding of higher prevalence of urge incontinence challenges the conventional view that COPD is associated with stress incontinence due to high pressure coughs.

Although as mentioned in Reply 4, incontinence can be caused by other health issues too, either way, a chat with the doc may mean you could get the problem under control.

I had a respiratory infection/exacerbation.a couple of weeks ago. Stayed home from work just to sit on the pot and cough and cough the crud up. Hemorrhoids are great also.
