Depending on your "mix" of COPD, there are a myriad of treatments that your pulmonologist will try to tune to fit you. As far as doing things on your own - there are quite a few.
If you are smoking , stop. Stay away from smokers and smoking enviroments.
Exercise daily - the stronger you are, the better you will be able to cope with this disease.
See if you qualify for a pulmonary rehab program. Not just for the exercise, but for the knowledge they impart.
Eat healthy, nutrient dense foods.

Attitude is important too since depression is common with COPD so if were to add two cents, it would be to get an anti depressant or talk therapy if you feel the need. Anything that improves quality of life is important this aging widow.
