I am not being judgmental, just trying to understand your post.
If the lady was talking about smoking, but on her way to a methadone clinic, she was probably trying to get off something harder than cigs.
There needs to be a better answer or he drug,addiction problem than giving them a drug to get off a drug.
I remember watching a documentary about the war , I think it was ww1, maybe ww2 also...anyway the wounded soldiers were given morphine to help their pain, and sure enough they became addicted.
so to get them off morphine later, they started giving them methadone, and sure enough, they became addicted.
You really have no way of knowing what a person is going thru , unless they tell you.
It is sad to know that is the best we can offer the addicted millions. But it is a good sign that she is going, trying to get off a bigger drug...

Methadone is a common opiate replacement drug - mainly because of cost and frequency of use. Quite often our witch doctors inflict us with massive amounts of opiates to fix one problem (I know this up close and in person) and then use methadone to wean one off the other narcotic. The other method (used on me) is to use naloxone to do an instant purge of all narcotics in ones system. I'd recommend being unconscious if you get that treatment - it hurts.
I'm currently on morphine for my cancer, but in this case addiction doesn't matter. What I'd do is pass on the web address for the smoking addiction group and offer up any support you can give...

Hi Denny, good to see you here. I work in a pharmacy, we give methadone to heroine addicts, and people who had narcotics given to them for pain and now need the methadone to wean off those narcotics.

Having spoken to many of them while serving them, they told me they beat drugs and all sorts of addictions, the hardest being smoking. They just can't seem to kick that one. Just thought I''d share that as it is one of the hardest addictions to beat.

This lady had many issues going on but my only point in mentioning her is that just when we think we are entitled to feel sorry for ourselves and our lot in life, we encounter someone who is in worse shape. When I said that i just shut up, it was because I was trying to imagine what it would like to be to be fighting an addiction plus dealing with diseased lungs.

That is true, one has to remember what we see on the outside from a fleeting contact has nothing to do with their inside. Many people suffer more from life than others...

Very good comments Sofie and DennyGene. And it is so true that most time when we sit and feel sorry for out burden, there is always someone with a worse burden.
I read some comments on facebook from people who were addicted to pain pills and such that the doctor gave them, and they were talking about trying MJ. I even heard that was good for COPD.

Thanks for your info also Jazzkeys, the smoking habit is killing so many, and even after we quit, it finds a way to continue killing us.

Cachexia is a complex wasting syndrome in chronically ill people who lose significant weight and experience decreased muscle strength and fatigue. This often is a sign of malnutrition.

MJ should be used with these patients to stimulate appetite and thus weight gain, promoting strength and a sense of well-being. Although research results are mixed, until very recently, MJ research has been very limited.

Dennis, since you are up,on drugs: i just told a lady who is dealing with her mother dying of COPD and very difficult that it is my understanding that morphine is the drug of choice in these instances.
Hospice doesn't seem to be giving it to her. Check it out and see how her treatment looks to you. Sad case.
