OK...I am at my wits end. I was hospitalized the first of April for chest pains and found out I had pneumonia and spent two days in the hospital. Since then, I have had about 6 sputum cultures done.....all showing strep pneumonia. I am allergic to about 7 different antibiotics which makes it hard to treat, but I am really ready to be better. I was diagnosed with COPD with emphysema in May. I have never smoked a day in my life, but have had recurrent bouts of pneumonia caused by GERD. I have never been one to cough anything up when I have had pneumonia, but I cough up junk daily now.
I have been sent to an infectious disease dr from my pulmonary dr to get to the bottom of it. I have recurrent fevers...just had one all day yesterday of 103. They come and go. I cannot over do it at all or they come back. The id dr just gave me a z pack, which of course did not work. I have been missing a lot of work and am mentally and physically drained from all this.
I guess one of my questions is.....is the coughing up of junk daily something I should get used to, or is it because of the pneumonia infection? Right now it is green...............
The other question is, has anyone else ever had this problem? I hate hospitals but right now I am ready to go and say admit me and give me iv antibiotics until we clear this up.
Any advise you can offer would be greatly appreciated. I am so very frustrated.

green spit is bad...i think. doesnt it mean infection? i've never had that. but sounds like you need some better antibiotics.

I know what you mean.....I never smoke but get ill just the same.
I think it's because I work around kids and they always carrying illnesses all the time with running noses, and caughing...which didn't help me.
I don't know which color is worse or not....but I do know the yellow wasn't good and the green was worse.....I hope you get the med's you need and start to feel better real soon
The Zpack doesn't work for me/ I get it time to time depending on who is treating me. Because I get a doctor that don't read my reports or is just doing that for it works for some...I have a munity build up is my problem. Too many drugs they use and body adjust to them.
I heard before that it works for others so if it does your in good hands.

Green phlegm = infection = get to a hospital and on intravenous antibiotics and prednisone.
