I also use Spiriva--but it's not normal for me to continuously cough as a result of using it. I wonder if it's just your lungs' initial reaction to a new substance being put in them. I think it does list coughing as a rare side effect, though. Discuss it with your doctor.

I dont think it should do that, you better ask your Dr.,but I've found that any meds for the lungs should be taken in the morning not before you go to bed because when you lay down is when the fluids in your lungs get shifted around and cause the coughing. I take Spiriva, Advair and Theophylline , and I take them in the am ,I'm supposed to take the Advair 2 a day but if I take it before bed I get that coughing for quite a while when I lie down so I dont always take it to late at nite.
Also I love ice cream , but dairy products do that to me too! If I have ice cream at night I suffer the coughing for quite a while when I go to bed. I found that sherbert is somewhat better to eat as it doesn't agrivate the lung so bad.

You should take it in the morning after you've done your bronchodilator & rinse & gargle afterward. Deb

Spireva and Advair had no effect at all on my condition....I told my Pulmonologist and we switched to other meds....I have been through several meds and combinations working with my doctor.....We have found some things that appear to really help without significant side effects.............................You and everyone else should develop a relationship with your doctors to get meds that help you.

I've been using spiriva since it hit the market. It's the best thing (med wise) I've got going. It takes about 2 weeks to start feeling the full benefits. Deb

Yes definitely, take it in the morning. When I first started it, my lungs didn't react very favorable. I felt these very strange sensations that were hard to describe. So my pulmonologist had me use it every other morning instead. That has really helped. I've since moved, and will be starting up with a new pulmonologist in a week or so. I wonder if he'll want me to start using it every day, since I've been on it for several years so far.

This medication is so helpful to most people that it's worth giving it a try.

Corler are you only taking 1 puff a day of the spiriva?
I don't know if coughing is a side affect as I never experience any coughing when I started or now. Sometimes after I use it I will cough but I attribute that to the medicine working and trying to break up the mucus. I could be wrong. Please let your Doctor know this.
I have been on spiriva for last 4 years/ At first I took it in the mornings but the Doctor told me I could take it at bedtime. I try to use it at least 1-2 hrs before I go to bed. In the beginning I didn't think it worked but it does seem to now. I also use Serevent and flovent. twice a day.
I have been on these 2 for last 8 yrs and I can tell when I go a day without them.
So you just have to find what works for you and make sure you have a good lung Doctor who listens to your concerns.

I was put on spireva a month ago, but i see no benefit from it. when i go back next week i will ask him for ventolin

I take spiriva and ventolin. Ventolin is just albuterol.
