ON SMOKING AND THAT ARTICLE posted by Gene and written by Ziggy
Hello all you great people, for reading what I wrote about the realities of COPD. I sent it to Gene for his opinion, and before I knew what was what, he posted it. I doubt I would have had the courage to have done it myself, for I did write it in anger, and in response to three of my closest friends, who just dont get it, a long story which Id like to shorten and send to you all, not just my precious friend, Gene! It would make a good follow-up and create more sense from where I was coming from at the time I spilled my guts out, and onto my keyboard.
I have been overwhelmed by all your responses, by people I dont know, and so many I do, from my being a member of DS in the past, and with whom I shared such great relationships. I had not realized my article would create so many provocative responses. It seems clear how significant smoking is ,and the impact it has had on all who have been and/or still are smokers.
I have been living with COPD for 25 years, and I do mean living. Whether or not we COPDers are dying for a cigarette, and I write that as a euphemism, I dont live my life in fear, thinking what I cant do, but rather, what I can. I love my life (for the most part!), and enjoy many activities. I can still take walks, dance from the waist up, talk with friends, those who really are still with me, whether they understand or not why I can or cannot go out with, depending how I am and what the weather is doing.
As one of you wrote in response to my/Gene/s post, medications and other therapies do make life so much easier than if there was nothing one could take or do to cure emphysema. Good on you all for saying what was on your mind. I had been trying to re-enter Daily Strength for months, as Gene can attest to, without success and plenty of frustration, so thank goodness I have my friend, Gene our mutual friend who has taken the initiative to share what I have written with you.

It took me so many tries to finally quit. I received constant criticism. Now, I know (what I knew then); I had no will to live-----so I continued to smoke and kill myself slowly. Anti-depressants and therapy have helped me to want to live; and learn some new coping skills. I try to wish every single member the best; no matter what their private issues. Best wishes.
