I think its probably less damageing, however I think the reason he didnt get COPD was probably more genenic.

IMHO he's lucky.

I know of several people in their 50's-70's that still smoke with no readily apparent ill effects. I also know of several that are sick or have died because of smoking.
A big part of it is in the body's makeup and susceptability to cancer or the various diseases lumped under the COPD umbrella.
This is a matter of "you pay your dues and take your chances". There is a measureable (20%) chance that someone that smokes is eventually going to be a first place winner in the dying from lung/heart disease lottery.
To put this in perspective, 93 people die in a motor vehicle accident every day in the US.

Agree that it does not matter what form of tobacco you smoke-----getting COPD/Emphysema is the luck of the draw----so to speak.
My Dad and both of his sisters died from Emphysema. My mother's brother died from Emphysema. I have Emphysema.
What about my siblings---that smoked? My older sister died from Colon cancer in 2010. Younger brother runs about 7 miles per day and is in excellent physical condition. My older brother may have COPD undiagnosed? I do not think they (medical experts) have all the answers yet. Why do some get COPD; and others do not? I still think genetic factors come into play, but I am not a scientist; geneticist; doctor; or trained medically.

I totally agree that cigarettes are bad bad bad. His point was the harmful chemicals, including cancer causing additives, cause a lot of the problems. Keep in mind I quit almost 5 years ago and have no intention on smoking again. I love your comments.

I agree it is probably genetic. However, all the ones in my family except for a very few died so young from other causes so no way to tell. I am begining to think getting older kills us all. Damn.

It's his genetic makeup that makes him as old as he is with little or no problems. My dad is ninety, quit ciggys 50 years ago, and can run circles around me. The truth be told, he might have been in even better shape had he not smoked!

The ONLY best kind of tobacco, regardless how it's ingested is, NO TOBACCO! PERIOD
