It can be purchased without a prescription at most pharmacies. CVS and Rite Aid carry them.

My local Walmart has them for $34....I am addicted to mind and love this one...........just bought a new one (at Walmart) in the last month.....I think I killed my old one...........LOL

OH..PS.....no blood draw.....just stick on finger and wait a second for the readings:):).......Mine is accurate with doc's office:):)

Boldprint, I wish is could get my husband to go to the doctor. He won't go. I want the oximeter so I can get some idea how bad he is.

Justshoot...........maybe once hubby actually SEE's how low his numbers are.........it might give him the kick he needs to get to doctor!!!!!!!!

I heard that it is important to use it first thing in the morning too to see if the numbers dropped too much during the night which might indicate other issues too.

Just, I have one, and as I sat here reading the replies I tested myself. I must be having a good day, O2 was 95 pulse was bit hi, but it's a good day. As everyone has said you can pick one up just about anywhere. And take yours to your doc't ofc for a comparison. Regards, Bill

I agree with all the comments, and especially if your husband gets a low reading, maybe it will prompt him to get a checkup!!

Take a reading first thing in the am, then after he gets up and walks around for a bit.

If it is real low in the morning, there may be problems with sleep apnea, or his oxygen may be getting to dangerously low as he sleeps. He may need night oxygen.

If it drops dramaticaly after he stands and walks it means he may have low blood oxygen during activity which may mean he needs oxygen during the day We all know (and keep praying for) what he really needs, but this my be a way to sneak it in. lol
Remember I said "may" on most of this, only a doctor can say for sure, but it will give you a starting point.

One thing to note. If you wake during the night it is good to take your SPO2 then. One of the symptoms of O2 shortage is poor sleep levels. As Brenda says,it's also best to take the morning readings before you get out of the bed, as lying down actually puts extra resistance against the diaphram...

Remember it is used as a 'trend' tool & not a diagnosis. It tells you the % of O2 saturation in the blood. It does not tell you how well the body is able to use that O2.

It is non invasive...like the glowing finger in the ET movie !

You can test the accuracy by using the pulse ox on yourself at the same time you are using the doc's. It won't matter who's results it displays ..as long as they are within a %.

I would also record the readings.........both o2 and pulse........with date, time and readings. Then when he is ready to go to doc, you will have something to take along to show doc.

Might want to record yours as well (separately) to show hubby the difference....and what normal is (assuming you are normal:)
