Hi !!

Understand this is my opinion only, and what I have read about FDA and new drugs.

A new drug must first be tested on animals, and this can take a long time, then before the FDA approves it, it has to be tested on humans.

This is when you see ads for "studies" you can participate in, actually it is just following rules and doing human testing.

Then, if the drug passes that test, and brings relief to the humans, without killing to many, FDA approves it for human consumption, based on the outcome of the studies.

Then the drug hits the market "fda approved" and at an inflated price, and for 10 years there are no other companies allowed to make that drug.

So the drug is on the market, it looks good, it works good, then years later, after taking it so long, it causes heart attacks, seizures, or what ever....if it starts killing people, or causing physical or mental problems, the fda will recall it . This is IF someone catches it, complains, and research shows that drug is the one doing it.

But the FDA can not follow every drug invented, every day ,for years , so they depend on the public to complain and bring it to their attention. Remember Viagra? Perfect love pill, and worked for that purpose for years, even tho that was not what it was invented for,,and went a long way to help ED, until it started causing men to die with heart attacks..

My personal thing is, I will ask for a drug that is at least 10 years old, from test tube to store shelf, because within 10 years, it is shown if a drug is going to work or not, or kill folks or not.

I do not always have that option, but for the most part I do, or I do not take the new drug. ANY drug, should show it's good or bad side within 10 years, if it gets that far, and no complaints, and I can get it, that is what I choose.

But most doctors push the new drug , so they will get freebies from the drug company. No one knows what a drug will do years down the line.....Just saying

PS, I do not believe in drugging kids anyway. People have really got carried away with the risperadal thing, I am glad parents are coming to their senses

Thank you Brenda! I agree with you and it just makes common sense that a well established drug is less risky than the latest pills on the market. I always steer away from the new ones myself and even though I am on warfarin for life I refuse to switch to the newest blood thinner until it has been thoroughly tested by time and use. By then I may not be here to try it after all! The problem with the so called wisdom that comes with age is that maybe my own warranty will have run out before I get to exercise it.......

Cindy, my thing is, if a drug is working and has worked for years, has caused no harm (that has been publicized) then why should I change it for something that just was invented. (Wrong word, but you know what I mean) If it works, don't fix it. You are doing the right thing

I think drugging kids is pure evil and has created a generation of "adults" who have no grip on reality and very poor judgement and social skills.

I hate medications of any sort and only take them when all else fails.

Amen Brenda!! I agree with everything you said, especially about drugging kids! We used discipline when I was raising children, not drugs!

PILLS FOR PROFIT! i know i`m supposed to be " nice and positive " with my comments , so, it`s " nice " to know somebody else { ilovethekitties } feels the same way i do about the pharmaceutical companies and i`m " positive " they are paid off by the corporations! HA! don`t get me started on this, i could probably write a book! think about it...when was the last " cure " for a major disease? polio...IN THE 50`s! since then, the corporate monsters figured out the money was in the sickness, NOT THE CURE! can you honestly believe, after all these years of "research" and "clinical studies" all they came up with is "boner pills! " the air we breathe...makes us sick! the water we drink...makes us sick! the food we eat...makes us sick! once we board the pharmaceutical train, there is no getting off. i avoided it for close to 60 years, but thanks to this chronic disease, i am now an unwilling passenger! take this pill $ for that, then take this pill $ to counteract the side effects from that pill $ then inhale this $ then inhale that $ go to the doctor $ and have this test $ then go back $ for the results....AAHHHH! hopefully there won`t be any recalls on any of the crap i`m taking to live, but, who knows! depends how much they paid the fda to get their "drugs " into circulation! { cannabis you say...even though it has been proven in " clinical studies " to help with an unbelievable amount of ailments and conditions, i`m sure THEY will keep trying to keep it illegal because if you can grow it in your backyard...NO MONEY FOR THE CORPORATE MONSTERS! they frown upon anybody screwing around with their multi-trillion dollar industry. } i watch WAY too much tv now, and at a certain time of night, all the commercials are about lawyers looking for clients who have had tragic consequences from drugs they have taken so they can SUE the manufacturer! many DIFFERENT drugs. there is a commercial for something called " low t, " i guess it`s a condition that happens to men when they get older because their testosterone level decreases { which i would guess is a natural thing to happen, not that i, or anyone else ever really THOUGHT about it until the corporate monsters figured they could make money by convincing men that to have " low t " is to be less manly. HA! } so... buy $ the " anti- low t " cream, rub it on your belly and feel like a macho man again! really!? is anybody really going to fall for this nonsense!? even with all the negative side effects they talked about { and there were many } i guess enough insecure men bought into this crap to make the corporate monsters a ton of money { boner pills = big bucks so why not macho pills...right!? } so...after the last time i saw the " low t " commercial, the following commercial was from one of those lawyers trolling for clients, and guess what it was for.... LOW T CREAM! HA! no joke! " if you or a loved one suffered blah blah blah..yada,yada,yada after using FDA APPROVED low t cream, you may be entitled to compensation. call now ! " INSANE! $$$$$! ok, i`ll stop now. i have to go take some " drugs. " it`s been " nice " to be able to rant and i am " positive " it made me feel better, if just for a moment. breathe in.....breathe out.....

Oxyman, you made a lot of good points, all of which I agree with, and you put it so eloquently, I had to laugh !!! But it does make sense in a way, especially the part about finding a cure.
Well, maybe not for copd unless it is a transplant or something, but they have made great strides in cancer research, why not a pill that eliminates it all together? I have often wondered about that.....and I still say if a drug has passed the "10 year rule" with no deaths from the drug its self, then that is the one i want, if I have to have one.

TroJan, I agree with your assessment of drugging kids grow up to be empty adults., with no skills or feelings.

Great2bme, I also agree with you , that when I was growing up, it was called being rowdy, or bratty, and discipline would usually do the trick. But now parents are afraid to discipline the kids, so are the schools, so now we have empty headed kids killing other kids ....

I KNOW for a fact that dispersal has been around OVER 10 years because my oldest daughter (38 now)was born with severe cerebral palsy and sometimes out of frustration (she has never walked and her speach is hard to understand but mentally she is high functioning) she bites her good hand. Over her lifetime we tried just about every psych type drug on the market with no real success. In 1999 I gave her 10mg risperdal and it caused her to become unconscious. I had to call 911 and rush her to the hospital because she is allergic to the drug. She NEVER too that crap again! I saw how those psych drugs would cause her to just sit and drool and take her personality away. I am her legal guardian an ALL I will allow her to be given is Wellbutrin and that is only because the group home requires she be on something.
So I KNOW for a fact that risperdal has been out there 15 years so I think I'd make the 10 year rule maybe 15 or more.
Oxyman some people might think that you telling things as they are isn't nice but not me. I learned long before I got sick that muddleing through life in rose colored glasses only sets one up to be taken advantage of. Now that I'm sick I have to be even more cautious.
BTW. I did see the ad about the low T cream for men. A bunch of snake oil salesmen! If it wasn't so dangerous it would be hilarious.

The problem with psychological drugs is that they do quite often effect different people in different ways; some of them quite serious and even dangerous. Like bj I too abhor the overuse of the drug Risperdal on children but there may be children for whom this drug may have been a life saver. I myself have been on Xanax since 1991 and would not be without it particularly with this respiratory disease I have now. I had serious panic/anxiety disorder even back then and I was healthy as a horse mentally and physically. It really has had no effect on my personality except to make me a much calmer person who could go to sleep at night. My doctor tried a few antidepressants that absolutely made me crawl up the walls yet other people benefit from those same drugs. The natural way to relax just does not work for me. I could probably try drinking myself into a consant stupor but alcohol does not seem to have a calming effect on me. Haven't tried cannabis lately because of the breathing problem so I'll stay with the Xanax because without it my breathing gets a lot worse. I don't think a lot of the FDA either and there are times when I think they are in bed with big Pharma. - Ruthie (aka dollaraudit)

Other comment re. Xanax - it is very addictive but let's face it, for those of us who cannot breathe, all of the drugs we take are, in a way, addictive. Since I will more than likely never get off the Xanax the fact that I've had some doctors tell me there are newer drugs that are not as addictive hasn't impressed me because they also didn't work.
