COPD & Emphysema Support Group
COPD is a progressive disease characterized by airflow obstruction or limitation. Emphysema is characterized by loss of elasticity of the lung tissue, destruction of structures supporting the alveoli and of capillaries feeding the alveoli. Both have symptoms that include shortness of breath, among other respiratory troubles. If you are a COPD or Emphysema sufferer, join...

I don't have COPD (my husband does), but I don't think my opinion would change if I were suffering a debilitating illness. I believe in miracles. I watched a close friend recover from brain cancer--against all odds. What if she had decided she didn't want to suffer at the end of her life and decided to end it? She wouldn't be here today, three years later, as healthy as she's ever been in her life.
I recently watched a disabled man I grew up with argue against right-to-die laws on C-SPAN. He talks about how when he turned (when we were 15), he would probably have opted to end his life if it were legal then. What a waste of a life that would have been. He has done so much good for so many people.
Yes, I realize it's a lot different for older people who are suffering from horrible illnesses, but that brings me back to my spiritual reasons for being opposed to it for myself. I don't believe I should take any human life, including my own. I believe that is a sin that would likely land me in hell, and, frankly, that is not where I want to spend eternity. LOL
That being said, I also believe that every person should be able make that decision for themselves. I don't expect anyone to believe what I believe. If it were to ever come up for me to vote on whether right to die should be legal in my state, I would vote for it.
He was disabled in a diving accident when we were 15. He stated that when he turned 18, he would have ended his life had it been legal to do so at the time.
I'm glad you are here :)

I fully realize for some "the right to choose" involves moral, ethical religious and other reasons that are personal to them as it should be.
I don't want to come off as one that sounds as maybe if you haven't got this disease or any other life threating disease, your perception may be somewhat different.
You can have empathy for others and still hold to your values and I really commend you for that.
For me and my family, I have to be the one to choose and they understand. I have tried to gather all of the documents that will allow me to refuse artificial means if I cannot function on my own. It will be their duty to advocate that my wishes are followed.
I am very comfortable with my faith and that My creator understands my choice. Some may say that when it is your time to go , you will. I would rather believe that God understands my thoughts and is willing to allow me to follow my wishes.
Love to all,
Anna
