COPD & Emphysema Support Group
COPD is a progressive disease characterized by airflow obstruction or limitation. Emphysema is characterized by loss of elasticity of the lung tissue, destruction of structures supporting the alveoli and of capillaries feeding the alveoli. Both have symptoms that include shortness of breath, among other respiratory troubles. If you are a COPD or Emphysema sufferer, join...
You do need help, and your weight will affect your breathing, and also the more anxious you get the more SOB you willl get, .
It shows you are from Virginia, and it seems ya'll are in a shortage of doctors? Or maybe just your area? In my opinion, the only way to know for sure about copd , (bronchitis is part of copd) is to see a lung specialist, . Yes the inhaler will help you with sob, and you will need to loosen the mucus and cough it up and out. That is maybe why your chest is tight. There are lots of things could be going on here, I would lose "Dr.Do Nothing" and get another one and see about a lung specialist. In the meantime, go to the ER if necessary for help. What kind of insurance do you have?
Well the most important thing you did was quit smoking, that right there will add years to your life. You will still be coughing, remember you been on them for years, so do not expect to be better over night,
Let us know what is going on. Waiting a year or a doctor here in the states just does not sound right. Maybe I am mis reading your post.

She just seems to think the anxiety is causing all my breathing problems, whereas I think the anxiety developed from them. And I seem to get out of breath even just walking around the room sometimes, nevermind going up steps and such. I am pretty heavy, but still...it seemed like a sudden change to breathlessness. She says the nose inflammation "allergic rhinitis" might be causing the breathlessness. I also get extremely bloated very quickly even though I'm not eating much and have actually lost over 10 lbs in less than 2 weeks.
I just can't imagine anxiety alone could cause me to get breathless just walking around the room - not completely out of breath, but certainly a perceived change from just a few months ago. I've done so much researching online in the last few weeks, and while I certainly know that's no guarantee of anything, there's only so many things this could be.
I wonder if my results on the spirometry test indicate copd if she'll just attribute it to my weight and lack of conditioning. Don't get me wrong, I don't WANT to have copd, but her attitude was that it wasn't something to be too concerned about unlike the blood pressure, which I know is important....but still.
however, there are so many other things that can cause lung problems i do hope that your dr does more tests than that.
my pulm insisted on an CT scan of my lungs also.
i am glad they put you on antibiotics because usually if i have "sudden" changes in my breathing i have an infection.
and you have the inhaler & you say that helps. this way you will be rid of any infections before a PFT so they can get a good reading.
when you went to the hospital, did they rule out heart problems?
or are you being tested further for that too?
what was your 02 reading at the hospital & at the dr office?
your post is heart breaking to me. i am so sorry you are being treated this way. My sister was overweight & that was all dr's could focus on.
my thoughts and prayers are with you.
I have so much bloating in abdomen. I;ve read that this can occur with copd. Also possibly hiatal hernia. Just with the pft tests were sooner! And I'm still not sure if an albuterol inhaler can improve breathing if you don't have copd/asthma. Can it?
If the inhaler helps, use it, but do not "over use it".

from Amazon. I think that's all my doctor uses. I can just check myself out. Has the beta blocker not helped your anxiety? It sure did mine. Try to relax with this as much as you can. It really doesn't matter all that much if you have COPD or not. There is no cure. You've done the best thing by stopping smoking altho it takes a long time to feel better from that. Now chill out and concentrate on being more healthy in general.
they don't order 02 until you drop to 88% or less.
i am on 02 24/7 and i do okay just sitting in a chair but if i get up & move around it drops like a rock!
i was told to keep my 02 over 90%.
and i have to take prilosec for gerd & for the past year or so i seem to "fill with air" when i lay down so i take an over the counter "gas x" for that
my GERD i had a long time before COPD though, so it wasn't because of my COPD. i don't know if the "swallowing air" is a copd thing or just another thing i have happening lately, but my dr said i could take the gasX & it seems to help me.
sorry, i can't answer you with if the albuterol inhaler would help breathing if you didn't have asthma or copd.
for me, the albuterol really doesn't help much, which is one of the things they do with the spirometry test; they test you before & after albuterol.
i was under the impression that if you have asthma the albuterol helps & if it doesn't help then you have copd.
i use a nebulizer for my albuterol & that helps me when i am sick or really short wind days, but my long acting inhaler seems to help me more.
I know it is worrisome, but try to enjoy your holidays and not worry about the tests. January is slipping up on me fast & will be here in no time.
ps, i just got over an infection and i am having to work back up on my walking. i bought a treadmill last winter just so i could keep active in the winter, as i lose muscle & endurance fast if i don't keep on it.
i'm not going to win any marathons, but i try to keep as active as possible. i have to do a little bit several times a day & push a tad further each day until i reach my "goal" time & distance...of course when walking is a good time to keep an eye on 02.
oh! and with copd we are supposed to eat a lot of protein---i think that helps keep our muscles stay good. (someone help here)
just thought i'd warn you that even if you have COPD the dr will probably tell you;
quit smoking, lose weight, excersise, eat healthy & use your inhalers (and keep your 02 over 90%)---that is pretty much what i was/am told do....oh, and get your flu shot & possible pnuemonia vaccine!
i'm not a medical professional, i am just a person with COPD & these are my experiences only....
Anxiety definitely adds to shortness of breath! So many possibilities, but self-diagnosis doesn't help. You need proper medical support. Pulmonary doctor? different Primary Care doctor? You need to reduce your anxiety by getting the proper care. As long as you have a bunch of possibilities swirling around in your head, you'll definitely feel worse no matter the problem.
At this time, a little aggressiveness is required until you'rcomfortable about the information given. Prior to seeing the doctor, write down the questions to address the health issues you're having.
Whatever your health issues, with the proper med. support and this group (of course), there are a variety of ways to reduce the effects - even if it's COPD.
Take care...
I've read some of the stories on here and they are heartbreaking - I kind of feel like I have no right to complain, as I'm still so much better off than a lot of the people on this board. But I'm 47, underemployed, living pretty much paycheck to paycheck, have a 7 year old daughter, and am terrified as to what will happen if I keep getting worse. I want to go on as long as I can for my daughter's sake but what if I can't work steadily and just become a burden? It just seems like a lot of my chickens are coming to roost all at once.
I kind of dread what happens if the testing shows probable copd, not just that I have it, but what this idiot doctor will do about it. She seems to be a drug pusher like so many other doctors today, without addressing underlying causes or lifestyle.
Fvc 99% of predicted. Fev1 105% of predicted. Fev1/Fvc 83% (predicted was 78%). Only thing else under 100% of predicted was Fef 75% at 94% of predicted value. Interestingly after taking a nebulizer, Fef 75% went up by over 58% and Fef25-75% went up by 24%. She said this was normal. FVC was nearly unchanged after nebulization and Fev1 went up by 5%.
Still feeling shitty, short of breath and increasingly anxious. I asked about lung cancer, hiatal hernia, anything else - she just says take your blood pressure medication and flonase (slightly inflamed diagnosed with rhinitis) and schedule a sleep study. How would sleep apnea make me out of breath during the day? Guess I'll find out eventually.
Wishing everyone the best health possible for the new year.
Or over eaters annonamous meeting to have some group support.
Or a Sunday school class even. You sound pretty alone with all this.
I wish you the best on your journey to better health.
Second, those numbers dont seem that bad for those of us with a consistent known chronic breathing condition thus I wouldnt worry as they are probably only silly minor warning signs at this time. So dont worry about it can safely be ignored for awhile yet..
Your situation sounds like it is less a chronic respiratory condition and simply something that is more likely leading up to a heart attack. Keep smoking and making other poor life choices BUT definitely stay close to a major hospital facility ( keep 911 etc, as a simple one button option on your smart phone and stay within less that 6 miles (15 minutes) from a facility) and you should be ok. People dont die from heart events like they used to. So you should be fine.
Your son will be fine. Plenty of nice people out there willing to help.
I am definitely suffering from anxiety but I've experienced that before at times and I never had shortness of breath like this. I wish my doctor would prescribe me something but she refuses without me seeing a psychiatrist. I'm trying breathing exercises, supplements but nothing is helping all that much. And I don't think anxiety explains the phlegm I cough up frequently - just a product of quitting smoking recently I hope.
Well, best wishes for the new year for all.
