GlaxoSmithKline has announced the commencement of two clinical programmes for a pair of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) treatments.
In association with partner Theravance, the firm has initiated a phase III trial programme for the once-daily LAMA/LABA combination bronchodilator treatment GSK573719/vilanterol, which will involve more than 5,000 patients.
Meanwhile, the companies will also begin a study of their drug Revolair among 16,000 COPD sufferers who are at risk from cardiovascular disease.
The former trial will aim to establish a safety and tolerability profile for the developmental treatment, while the latter will assess the survival benefits of Revolair among the patient group in question.
Darrell Baker, senior vice-president for GlaxoSmithKline's respiratory medicines development centre, said: "Cardiovascular risk factors remain a very important cause of morbidity and mortality in this disease and this study is crucial to assessing whether Relovair can benefit these patients."
This comes after the company announced last week that it has also begun phase III clinical studies for GSK2118436 and GSK1120212, two new treatments for metastatic melanoma.

Cost wise it would compete with generic Advair.
Another ICS/LABA not mentioned in this article that is being developed to compete with GSK is Norvartis' Indacterol/Mometasone.
Indacterol is now in trials for once daily LABA only under the trade name of OnBrez . This is treatment of airflow obstruction in adult patients with COPD.
Its good to know our scientist's, researchers and volunteers for the studies are working so hard to help us have a better quality of life.
I thank them all so much for their good work and for the great sacrifices, and risks the volunteers are willing to take to be a part of these studies to help us all.
When I tried to find out more regarding the possibility that this is tied to the stem cell research that is being conducted to use your cells to target a diseased part of the body it took me to molecular stucture, which is greek to me.
Deb, or anyone, do you know if this is connected? I also read that Daxes' initial target group aare those that suffer frequent exacerbations and have a chronic cough with sputum.
I think our best treatment is going to come by the way of using our
cells to target specifice areas as has already been used in some medical applications.
