Drugs like Claritin, Allegra, Zyrtec and Benedryl should be avoided by people with lung issues because it's known to thicken the secretions. This is why they never give it to children.

Then use your spray. If it is over the counter, you should be told not to use but so many days because it makes it worse.
Prescription which are pricier, can be used every day if necessary. I know because I have chronic post nasal drip and seasonal allergies.
Also several otc meds may have sudafed which is bad for us. The other two ladies gave you good advice also. Hope ypu get better.
The cough suppressant which i assume the ''Tessalone'' is and i might be wrong is not good if you do not cough and need to bring up mucous...
We also are now going to get the "Vest". It's a vest that you wear that vibrates and breaks up the phlegm. Hoping this will provide the help he needs. A friend of mine who's husband has the vest says it does help him. Talk to your pulmonary doctor about it.
i take zyrtec for my allergies---i never thought about it drying my lungs out, but i can't stand my seasonal allergies without it...i'll have to ask my dr about it (although without it my nose is so runny that i can't wear my 02---so i guess i have to give up one for the other LOL)
