I'm a very outspoken advocate of a medic alert system. You might try your local hospital for suggestions. We can connect with one through ours. It;s a really good idea whether you live alone or not...even if you have someone there, you never know when they might be at the store or some such and you need help.

The other thing I've said so many times it's redundant is to get yourself a medical alert bracelet listing the meds you're on... this is beyond helpful to doctors, etc., should an emergency arise. For myself, I also put my meds and any conditions I have on a list with a bright marker. EMS and fire personnel are trained to look there if you're unable to communicate.

Some of them are ridiculously expensive. The device itself is not bad, but, when you can get them to admit it, have monthly fees in the ballpark of $75. While to many people I guess that's $75 well spent, to me it would mean giving up one or more of my medications to pay that. I am thinking about tattooing DNR on my chest, though, just in case.

I believe there are some MedicAlert bracelets now that are USB drives, which would be great for putting crucial information on in a txt or even .doc format. I'm on so many meds (Rx and OTC) that if I were to put them on a bracelet, I'd either need one of those people that can write books on a grain of rice or a bracelet that runs from wrist to elbow.

Moonsky, I too have thought a long time about this. I purchased one system which plugs into a phone outlet and has 3 separate "boxes" that you place in different rooms. There is no monitoring. You just press a button when you're in distress, assuming you're near a box.. It's pretty much still in the initial box. I don't like the idea of wearing one as the thought of a constant reminder that I'm sick affects my sensibilities. My latest thought was to commit to In-home care where among other services, I could schedule a call-in(daily, weekly). I'd just have to have my cellphone at all times. Since I'm very stubborn, I'd set the call-in for monthly because I have no problems! Not good - I could be in trouble or worse for weeks!

I'm thinking about getting one that would be linked with my ADT security system. We had a home invasion, close to me, that involved a 93 year old woman. She had one & the robbers didn't notice, but she pushed the button & it not only notified them immediately, but they were listening to the thugs the whole time. They didn't even make it out of the house before the cops were there :>)

I would think an alert close to your body would be best. I found myself in trouble in my bathtub and couldn't get out (long story). I finally managed but was quite traumatized and started thinking seriously about a medic alert at that time. I do live alone, but even if you live with others you easily could be home alone at times. A medication bracelet is an excellent suggestion.

I've seen ads lately that our cable company is starting to get into the home security business, including medical emergencies. It makes sense since your home is already wired if you have cable. I haven't explored fees, but would like to learn more.

It always helps to always have your cell phone on hand, in a pocket or a belt holder.

After reading this post today I went to Ebay and purchased a USB Medical Information Alert Card. It's the size of a credit card that plugs into any computer and you can put all you medical info on it. Will be interesting to see how it works. I'm not much of a jewelry person. I also bought one for my son-in-law that just recovered from a stoke and has severe diabetes. He's finally back to work and out and about. It's suppose to easily fit in your wallet.
