COPD & Emphysema Support Group
COPD is a progressive disease characterized by airflow obstruction or limitation. Emphysema is characterized by loss of elasticity of the lung tissue, destruction of structures supporting the alveoli and of capillaries feeding the alveoli. Both have symptoms that include shortness of breath, among other respiratory troubles. If you are a COPD or Emphysema sufferer, join...
Your FEV1 IS 71%. The Fev1 is the amount of air you can blow out in the 1 st second. The FEV1 is a good indicator to what stage of COPD you're in. 71% would put you in the moderate stage. Your FVC shows all the air you blow out and that is sort of low in your case to., 72 %.-
The results are not terrible and I think with the right life style , you can live a long time with it.
Please take this up with your doctor and let him/her explain all this to you also.

i feel a sleep study is very important, not only for the apnea, but when sleeping our respiratory drops more than daytime (that is why most people get put on supplemental 02 at night at first).
and of course we are asleep so we don't realize it.
when i cared for my mom she didn't want to wear her 02 so i asked her dr why can't she just have it off at night, after all she was asleep so her 02 should be better in my mind & her dr explained that was the most important time to wear it.
may i ask what your 02 numbers were during the sleep study & did they recommend supplemental 02? ( DUH!=of course i guess with sleep apnea you would need CPAP so that would cover it, but other than the apnea what were your 02 readings?)
nosey aren't i?
once again, welcome to the board
ODI OXYGEN DESATURATION INDEX 55
Average Saturation 96
Lowest desaturation 85
Lowest saturation 85
Baseline saturation 98
Some people have trouble getting used to it. I didn't. I love my BiPAP machine 'cause I know that when I'm having trouble breathing, I can put on the mask, turn on the machine and take a relaxing nap while my lungs are being opened up by the positive air pressure.
your oxygen desat is 55 but lowest is 85?
i don't know what 02 company you use but lincare has an in home simple finger test you can ask for any time for free & i like it because i can take it with my normal routine.
it's just a finger monitor & not all of the other stuff hooked to you that i couldn't sleep right.'
it showed my 02 dropped to 66 (with 2LPM o2) at night and was so much more informitive to me & my dr even said the results were more accurate & gave better info.
if you have lincare it sure couldnt hurt to get a 2nd opinion for free and compare the numbers.
my opinion only
The oxygen Desaturation Index is the number of times per hour of sleep that the blood's oxygen level drops by 3 % or more of baseline.
