AFAIK pneumonia will reduce lung function. How much will depend on the severity of the infection. 100% recovery after a exacerbation with pneumonia? I say not losing some lung capacity would be rare. Physical recovery from a lung infection can take months. I've never reached the same physical capacity after recovery from an infection.
When a person's oxygen level drops below 88% or they have trouble doing day-today things it is time to get serious about O2. Putting it off is not a good idea. It will make the damage worse...
