Charles Kirkpatrick has found the Onbrez Breezhaler an effective treatment for his COPD.
KENWICK resident Charles Kirkpatrick is breathing easier since trialling a new drug for his lung condition.
The new inhaler treatment for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) became available on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme this month.
COPD is used to describe a range of long-term lung conditions that narrow the bronchial tubes, causing coughing, shortness of breath and phlegm build-up in the lungs.
Since participating in the trial for the Onbrez Breezhaler, Mr Kirkpatrick said his cough had improved.
Im out on the bowling green two or three times a week and its a lot easier, he said.
Its changed my life I feel a lot better.
After Mr Kirkpatrick asked his doctor six years ago about his persistent cough, he was diagnosed with COPD.
He was told it was probably caused by his work as an engineer in UK shipyards in his twenties, where he was periodically exposed to asbestos and welding activity during the installation of ship engines.
Mr Kirkpatrick used another inhaler after being diagnosed, but still coughed a lot during the day and had trouble going about everyday tasks without frequent rests.
Onbrez Breezhaler works by relaxing the muscles of the airways and is the first of its type of medication, called a bronchodilator, approved for listing on the PBS.
COPD is the fourth most common direct cause of death in males and the sixth most common in females in Australia, according to The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I got a letter in the mail yesterday asking if I would be interested in study for a new medication for COPD.
The company is Acurian, but they didn't say what the medication was.
I haven't called them as of yet.
Has anyone else here gotten a letter?
