First off, if you are smoking, please quit. If you have just quit, you need to have another PFT done by a pulmonologist. If the doc that gave you the DX isn't a pulmonologist, make an appointment to see one. The measurements will change after being quit for a few months.
Exercise is the second best thing you can do, walking or treadmill, yoga, weight training, etc..
Eating a balanced diet.
Taking the medications. Most enable you to breath a little easier.
Home Oxygen. If your blood O2 is falling beneath 88% you should ben on home oxygen. The O2 will provide much needed energy to your systems.
Now the not so good news. Currently there is no way to repair the damaged portions of your lungs. There are procedures that can reduce the volume of the dead lung tissue, thereby making room for the good tissue to expand. There are transplants that can be done. These are good questions to ask your pulmonologist about.
Many of us have has this disease a long time, so look around you'll find a wealth of knowledge and help here...

As for the standard numbers from the information I have recently seen from a quit smoking site...... It says.... "within 3-9 months of quitting smoking, lung volume will increase by 10%." Also, circulation, blood pressure and a bunch of other things improve. This info was from a UK lung association timeline for 10 minutes to the 15 year point.
Good luck with your quit smoking bid.
