Hello everyone, hope you are keeping warm. I posted this on the COPD group on FaceBook and wanted your advice too.
My question today is about fireplaces. They say stay away from wood burning fire places because they are bad on your lungs...What about a wood burning fire insert that has a door and heat comes out through a vent. I have had furnace problems and have been using ours. It does not seem to bother me. I leave the room when my daughter adds wood.

You have to stay warm, but it is obviously very important to avoid wood smoke. You can't assume that because it does not bother you today it will not effect you tomorrow. Call the United Way & see if you can get assistance to have your furnace repaired.

Got furnace repaired, but with this cold spell the heat from fireplace felt pretty good. Your right I will pay for in in the long run. Wish warmer weather would get her I am starting to get the winter blues and ready to climb the walls.

A central funace is ideal, but that being said a insert or pellet system can be safe.Powered fireplace inserts and pellet inserts that use an outside air kit are "sealed", allowing no air associated with combustion in the house. The ones with no kit only draw cold air for combustion from inside. It should be OK if the door seals are intact. To ensure the integrity of the heater, I'd install high quality smoke and carbon monoxide sensors above the unit on the ceiling.

Dennis: I have a top loader down draft wood stove. once the circulation starts, everything goes out the flue.

The first couple of years I had this house I couldn't get the gas turned on ( problem with the yard lines ), so I couldn't use the forced air furnace.

The first year using the stove only, was also the first year that I didn't get a couple respiratory infections during the winter.

Go figure? Gary
