Eating Can Be Risky Business for COPD Patients

So slow down, chew your food well and,

use the exhale-swallow-exhale pattern.

This helps so you dont inhale food particles.

Poor coordination between swallowing and breathing in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) may increase risk of aspiration pneumonia and exacerbations, researchers warned.

COPD patients swallowed solid food during inhalation twice as often as healthy individuals (P=0.002), Roxann Diez Gross, Ph.D., of the University of Pittsburgh, and colleagues found.

I inhaled a small piece of corn last night at dinner and.

I spent several hours afterwords coughing.

The cough and corn produced a lot of mucus

I had a really hard time not to mention scaring my daughter.

The corn did dislodge finely.

I came back to this post so I will remember as I eat what to do to avoid this problem in the future.

Ohana thanks for reminding us to breath through the nose, that's really good advice to add to the above.

I don't ever want to go through that again, and wont be eatting corn for a good while I think.

I learned with raw carrots ! I usually rest after coming to the table and I don't begin eating until I am not so short of breath. Always always be very careful. Hugs & smiles, Ohana

I have had difficulty with croutons in my salad. I choked on them once and I thought okay. Tried then again at another time choked on them again.So now I just don't use them.
