My COPD has gone from mild to moderate stage over a two year period. I do not smoke but did years ago. I am now widowed and no longer around second hand smoke either - also has been years.
My cardiologist seems to think that we can keep the COPD from progressing further. He also wants me to us Advair which never seemed to help in the past and any kind of steroids make my blood pressure and blood sugar go up so I only use it rarely, if at all.
I cough in the morning. I have diminished lung capacity - 50% now I am told. I tire easily. I need to hire services to maintain my home but do okay otherwise.
I also had pulmonary emboli and they took forever to dissolve but they did finally disappear as of the last CT scan.
I appreciate any of your insights into this and thank you in advance.

inhaler. But it is best to see a specialist and tell him everything and let him decide what is right for you. There are several inhalers on the market. Mine changed me to symbicort, which is a steriod but different than Advair. The steriods are suppose to keep inflamation down in your lungs. Google copd and read up on it all. webmd is a good one, and our fellow friend, who knows who he is,always has the best websites to go to. So you will be getting more advice, mine is just my opinion. All of these folks have great, right on , advice.
Good luck with it, and also, ask about pulmonary rehab, an exercise program which will really benefit you and the progression .

You cannot stop the progress of COPD. However you can slow it down and maximize the lung capacity you have left with certain medications, eating wisly and serious exercise. We are all different so a tailored medical regimen and diet is most likely, but the exercises and life style precautions are pretty much the same for all of us.
You speak of your cardiologist. If you can, have them recommend a pulmonologist. Like heart disease, COPD is a many faceted disease that often requres a up-to-date specialist to provide an accurate diagnosis and adequate disease support profile. The more support you have, the longer you can fight off this disease...

My cardiologist seems so sure I can stop the disease from progressing but I don't have his confidence in that belief even though I would love to believe it.
I still ride the stationery bike almost every day for 30 minutes, eat well, take my meds, and still feel nonplussed about the future.
I'm taking everything in that you all tell me. I hope to not have to be on O2 every day but who knows what will happen next?
When you mention steroids are those you are taking orally or inhaling? There are different kinds in inhalers and perhaps you just need to find one that is right for you. Inhaling rather than ingesting could make a difference in reactions.
It is best if you have a pulmonologist. Has the cardiologist ordered any pulmonary tests other than a CT scan. This is important to tell where you are with COPD and if you has an asthma component. It will tell you how you respond to broncodilators. You should have at least a PFT and arterial blood gas (ABG), and usually once a year
I agree, it can't be stopped but it can be slowed dramatically. Remember, too, our lungs age naturally, just as we do, regardless of COPD or not.
Tiring easily, I believe, is not uncommon with this disease. Actually, I think its one of the things that first sends people to their doctors. As mentioned, it can also be sleep related...that happened to me, too.

One thing is invaluable - personal knowledge. The more you understand about your variant of COPD, the better able you will be to cope with it. A Pulminary Function Test (PFT) will tell you much of what you need to know. How much of a mix of bronchitis and emphsema will dictate courses of action. Being able to monitor you pulse and oxygen saturation levels will keep you informed as to when you need to take a break or slow down a bit - or if O2 is needed to keep you from getting sicker faster...

Experience continues to teach me that nothing is predictable with this disease and that to try and read the future is impossible.Do the best that you can for yourself make the very best of good days and always be prepared for the unexpected without being burdened by fear and worry of what the future may or may not bring.
You went from mild to moderate in a 2 year period. Not to frighten you, but you really need to get to a Pulmonologist, or in another 2 years you could be rated severe or worse. 50% is a significant decrease in lung function. You need to see a specialist as soon as possible to not only extend your life, but extend the quality of your life. It's important, and you'll never regret it. Good luck, Cindy!
I have to have my Coumadin levels checked on Friday and will ask for a referral and then check the Dr out before making an appointment..
I will ask others who have knowledge of the medical community in the area as well.

Natural Herbs Clinic: Scam
Well, it’s been a while since I brought any news scams to your attention. I had gotten a bit tired of the whole business, to tell you the truth. It's quite soul destroying and generally unaffirming. Also, the amount of work involved with keeping up with scammers is quite daunting. However, I happened upon a new scam recently, which I thought you should know about.
Natural Herbs Clinic claims to treat a number of very tricky-to-treat medical conditions, from hair loss (Alopecia), to cancer (Waldenstrom’s Macroglobulinemia) and a bunch in between (hello, Motor Neuron Disease).

The other way I know this site is a scam is because I recognize a lot of the language, ingredients and other factors therein. The people running this site have been taking lessons from the people running other sites I have outed as scams. Maybe they are the same people? I don’t know.
And lastly, I know it’s a scam because (...oh God). Because I READ it. Without blinkers. Without blind hope that it will cure me of anything! I read it dispassionately and objectively. Let me break down some of the wording from the …let’s pick one: …Alopecia (may as well start at the top) page. And let's start by saying the language, grammar, and syntax doesn't sound very UK to me at all. It reads very English-is-not-my-first-language. Here goes with an example:

This formula has been produced after a detailed research done on the herbs that have been used to formulate this herbal formula. Every ingredient used in the product is herbal and involves no harsh chemicals. See what I mean about the English? Let's break it down some more:

Cure. They said “cure”. Not treat. Cure. Now, stop and actually think for a minute: Don’t you think, if they actually had a cure for Alopecia (or cancer) that this would be NEWS somewhere? Like in the UK, where they claim to be based? But it isn’t. Hmmmmmm.

Yes. Because nutmeg is so linked to hair retention in the research. …NOT.

Yeahright. We’ll get to that later

Suitable for all. …ALL? Seriously? Babies? pregnant women? Nursing mothers? The elderly? ...regardless of other medical conditions (diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure…)? Regardless of ANY medications you might be on (MAO inhibitors, anyone)? And no side effects whatsoever? Not in anyone, ever? Not even some constipation? Maybe a little dry mouth?
Finally: About That Refund Policy
Well, I have been doing this for a few years, and I have heard from many, many people who have tried and failed to get their money back from scam artists like this: Basically, It all leads me back to my first point: Accountability.
Say you are unsatisfied with the product and you want a refund. You return it and you hear ....nothing; -which is usually what happens, BTW. What can you do then? You can e-mail the website. But you may not hear back, or you may hear platitudes and excuses for weeks on end. What do you do then?
There is nothing you can do.
You can’t call them -there's no phone number. You can’t write them, the address isn’t valid. You can’t sic your lawyer on them, because he won't find them either. "Natural Herbs Clinic" could be anywhere in the world!
You can’t even go through your credit card company, because they only accept PayPal. You can try and search for them online, but all you will find is a bunch of fake blogs and message board entries on places like cancer sites; -the scammers trying to sell the products to sick people and drum up business.
So you are out $100, have probably ingested poison and they get off scott free.
Please don't order any of these products, no matter how desperate your medical condition. They won't help and they might hurt you.
