Yes, Sabrina....the mucus needs to be coughed up because if it stays in the lungs it can develop bacteria and Dad will end up in the hospital with a lung infection. As long as the color of it is clear, he is ok, but if the color changes to green, yellow,ect, that is signs of infection and he will need to be seen by a doctor. It is good he is bringing it up...

I do most of my coughing after I use the nebulizer..does your Dad use one? I think it really helps me get the "gunk" out.

If he's coughing it up, it's not sitting there growing germs. I like Mucinex to thin it out. Makes it a bit easier to cough up. Drinking lots of water helps too!

A nebulizer is a machine that delivers medication in mist form, that some say goes deeper in your lungs and opens better than an inhaler. most of use have both, and I use my nebulizer when I am really bad congested. It seems to bring up mucus quick. He needs a doctors order for one, so you might ask....

i wish i could cough up the mucus and get it out of me instead of this "stuck" in throat choking feeling!
(i keep getting sick because i DONT cough it up & then it forms bacteria & causes me illness then i get antibiotics & it comes up; i feel better, stop coughing & then we start all over again :/)
the others are right, coughing it up and getting it out is good and that is why dr's don't encourage cough syrups to stop it.
it must be annoying, but our bodies have a way to take care of ourselves.
have you ever had a horrible cold and when you finally started coughing up stuff you knew that was a sign that it was finally "breaking up" and getting rid of the illness?
if you have experienced that, think of it as that is what your dad is doing.
