Studies have shown that family history is a risk factor for COPD, but have not accounted for family history of smoking. Researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital, the University of Colorado, and National Jewish Health compared 821 COPD cases with 776 control smokers from the COPD Gene Study, capturing parental smoking and COPD histories, along with environmental tobacco smoke exposure.
Their findings noted a strong risk factor for COPD when a family COPD history exists, independent of other factors. This article is published in the August issue of Chest, the peer-reviewed journal of the American College of Chest Physicians: Chest. 2011;140(2): 343-350.

So I think that is so what you found out.
As for looking it up because most of my family is all pass on. I using geneology hoping to find it there something.
As well I had an aunt who had something as well....with Asma (mis spell)

Although I only have one sister dx'd with COPD, one younger brother died when blood vessels burst in his lungs, and my mother died of lung cancer.
There were six of us kids, born from the early 40's to the early 1950's. All 6 of us were exposed to 2nd hand smoke from birth! 5 of us 6 became heavy smokers. Just like our parents and grandparents before us.
As I said, 2 fatalities in my family directly related to cigarette smoking and/or early exposure to 2nd hand smoke. We grew up in an age that glorified the cigarette. With the cig makers knowing of the addiction and disease factors that we would be facing in our futures. circles aroun
My fayher, at 89 years old today, has been smoke free for 47 years and is still going strong. He literally can run If I had only listened to him "way back then"!
