The History Channel has been running a series called, "America, The Story of Us". Apparently, Jamestown was on the brink of extinction when a 24 year old man named Philip Roth arrived and brought with him tobacco seeds - tobacco at that time was like gold - the tobacco he planted took root and in two years Jamestown became a boom town supplying tobacco to England which was addicted to the stuff. It became America's main export. So, apparently, the addiction has been with us for a very long time. Made me wonder what they called COPD back then.
