I'm sorry for your loss.
The docs say being short of breath (SOB) can be either physical or emotional. In either case you want to speak with a pro, the medical can be COPD related, the emotional can be stress or anxiety related. http://www.mindpub.com/art501.htm

Of course ideally I should be able to handle minor stress but this disease tends to lend itself to emotional instability at times .Totally understandable in your situation sparkles as you battle with the grieving process.
The vocal cords open and close to let air into the lungs and when you get stressed or anxious, they can just close off. This is the same as a lot of asthmatic patients have.
I try to avoid situations that will cause a reason to cry but since that is basically impossible, the best thing to do is what Yew suggested in his reply.
I first use an emergency inhaler and then I try to relax my body as much as possible and breath in and out slowly. You mentally put yourself in a place that is far removed from the situation that causes the stress and anxiety.
I have heard people that suffer anxiety attacks describe their feeling of not being able to breath and it sounds the same as I feel.
I am so sorry for your loss and I hope you are able to use breathing techniques to help you.
So sorry for your loss and sorrow.
