Common Variable Immunodeficiency Support Group

Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is a group of 20-30 primary immunodeficiencies (PIDs) which have a common set of symptoms but with different underlying causes. CVID's underlying causes are different, but the result of these are that the body doesn't produce sufficient antibodies in response to exposure to pathogens.

Would anyone dare join a Gym?

Just curious to know, would anyone join a gym knowing you have CVIDS? I ask, because I would really love to join one and "pump" my muscles, they are getting weak. But I am so afraid of all the "germs" on the equipment, espeically "staph", even though wiping them down with disinfectant would probably work. I just worry I'll pick something up, I'm I being neurotic?

I was a member of a gym and had been for years but found that I'd get sick pretty often when I'd go. I don't think they're really good for people with immune deficiencies seeing that alot of people go to the gym sick hoping they will get better by working out. The locker rooms are just a germ magnet as well--with all that humidity. I have invested in some gym equipment at my house and find that it suits me alot better. That's just my opinion, though. Hope this helps!

Yeah, that pretty much what I believe also. I don't have money for gym equipment, but I suppose I could use the big rubber bands to stretch my muscles. I don't want to take a chance, with all those nasty germs allover the surfaces of everything. Thanks

If you have about $250, you could get a Wii Fit. They're actually fun to use, and the cheering crowds and cheerful music when you do well is very encouraging. Plus you don't have to feel uncomfortable about weirdos bothering you. ;)

OMG....My Doctor, yes the same one that told me that I don't have CVID, told me that I should start going to a gym. I told him that every time I go, I get sick. He said, "Well, it's probably just the dry air in there." I was like, "Huh?"

So, yes, I get sick every time I go. I want to go because I need to lose weight but, at what expense.

Time for that second opinion! Huh?

Yeah, thats crazy. How can you all of a sudden NOT have CVIDS!!!! Did he draw blood and see that your levels were up? I mean if you went without a infusion for a month your levels would be severely down. Does anybody know how fast the levels stop dropping after 1 month? I have zero immunoglobulins and I know at the end of each month they have dropped down low again until my next infusion, the trick is getting your levels up and keeping them there consistently. Thats how you prevent from picking up all the infections. At least thats what I think. I don't know for sure. But thats what I assume.

I was a member at Planet fitness for several years. I cleaned every piece of equipment super well before I used it. I got a lot of looks at first but eventually people got used to the weird girl. What was harder for me was convincing my husband to do the same when he came.
