Common Variable Immunodeficiency Support Group
Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is a group of 20-30 primary immunodeficiencies (PIDs) which have a common set of symptoms but with different underlying causes. CVID's underlying causes are different, but the result of these are that the body doesn't produce sufficient antibodies in response to exposure to pathogens.
Got to love the port though..It saves the nurses poking our arms 10 times to start an IV...Do you have a single or a double?
You will get to stay off the antibiotics, I am determined with you. Stubborn lungs have been going around this year, But I have to believe 2014 will be better. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we were all infection free next year?
Probably a protein shake with a couple tablespoons of Nutella or peanut butter added will add the extra calories. You could make it like a milk shake & use whipping cream....Very High in calories...
Lots of Hugs & Smiles

Lucky you in some way. I can't even look at food anymore without putting weight on. No ice cream here.
I also used to make a banana shake with fresh banana, milk, 2 eggs, a little bit of vanilla and ice and it was SO good and put some weight on me, too.
Thinking of you.....
hugs & prayers

MissSophie, I have a single lumen power port. The first thing I thought of was how easy my shower is going to be. Actually I'm a trouble maker when this thing is accessed and don't always comply perfectly:)
I love lamb. I get these gyros down the road, and the lady always gives me extra food:) And I think I will stay off of IVs longer this time. Things were stable! Yayy! Thank y'all for the sweet replies as always! Maybe once I fatten up I will be in the clear!
It might be that your not absorbing the nutrients through the colon. Perhaps a quality multi vit/min in powder form mixed into a drink could help to take into the blood stream the calories eaten.
I was just reading about this at the doc office. Ill try to take notes Monday off the chart for weight gain. I think zinc was one of the the important ones for gain.
Didn't matter how much I ate I wasn't absorbing any nutrients & then I was really run down & unable to fight anything...When your doctor checks your blood I know they check potassium & magnesium but what about calcium and the rest of your vitamins? My hematologist told me a lot of people with CVID have malabsorption problems until things start working again...Symptom of this is severe diarrhea...When it gets real bad even immodium doesn't work...
Feel better my prayers are with you. I wish I could just have one wish for Christmas this year & that is to make all my DS friends Healthy...
Big Hugs Glider to you & your puppy,
Cheryl
I'm so glad you are doing better! As of right now, being underweight is not something I'll have to worry about for a long while, so I might have some tips. Lol. :) I agree with Mountains, eat at night. This time of year is pie season, so have some pie and ice cream. :) Nuts are also really high calorie, but they are also fairly good for you and it doesn't take many to have quite a few calories. I agree with Miss Sophie who said peanut butter or Nutella. If it were me, I don't think I could handle straight up lard. Maybe biscuits and real cow butter?
I enjoyed you referring to the hospital as the slammer. My doctor calls it The Hilton. It's kinda of funny because he says if I don't get better, I might have to go to The Hilton, asks how my stay was at The Hilton, and tells me to enjoy my gourmet meals at The Hilton.:)
I hope you start feeling better soon!
Hugs,
Ashlee
It's funny when I am in the hospital I ask them to stamp my rewards card, for every two nights I stay I earn one free ticket to Disney Land or Every week I stay I earn three night at Disney Land Hotel...But the person from admissions said she never heard of the rewards card...I told to check, because I heard I had a VIP card now...She didn't think this was funny...
What is FUNNY is I cannot eat a lot of fatty foods and the kitchen always messes up the order. They say they don't have a low fat menu, the doctor has to write specifically no more than 5 grams of fat per meal..Because it is a hospital they make their mashed potatoes by the batch, it's a big batch mixed with milk, potatoes & fake butter & salt. But I cannot eat eat them, to much fat.. But plain mashed potatoes were one of the few things I could eat and not get sick. My husbands boss asked my husband one day when I was in there for three weeks how things were and my husband mentioned the mashed potatoes and laughed about it. Well the next day the head of the kitchen cam to my room and asked how I liked my mashed potatoes, & how much fat I could eat & what else I would like to eat. Turned out my husbands boss is on the board of the hospital...Now when ever I go into the hospital the kitchen staff calls & asks if I have any special requests, & they make my potatoes special just for me...And every time I get admitted there is a case of bottled water delivered to my room. Still haven't figured that one out...Guess I should have my hubby ask his boss...
Oh well I guess it pays to have a boss with deep pockets & a big heart..
We are very blessed my husband has a great boss..
MissSophie- My PI is basically because I'm a mucus bucket. It blocks everything. It won't go away, and I'll deal with enzymes and nutrition stuff forever. No biggy, but interesting to hear about it in somebody else. I always found it strange that I can randomly get bouts of pancreatitis with extremely high lipase counts, but yet can't seem to get any enzymes into my digestive tract. I know it's common, but doesn't make sense in my brain!
