Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is a group of 20-30 primary immunodeficiencies (PIDs) which have a common set of symptoms but with different underlying causes. CVID's underlying causes are different, but the result of these are that the body doesn't produce sufficient antibodies in response to exposure to pathogens.

Switching from Sub-Q to IVIG

Hi. I have been doing Hizentra Sub-Q for a year now.  My numbers only went up slightly.  I am still getting sick a lot and getting side effects from Hizentra.  I only get 2 or 3 days (every 12 days I do the sub-q) feeling better.  I am frequently nauseous and exhausted.  I went to another Immunologist and she go it approved to switch to an IVIG center once a month.  Has anyone done both treatments? Any input? I am nervous switching.

I've never done SubQ before, but I'm very happy with my IVIG. I've been doing IVIG for almost 10 years now and it works very well for me. I like only having to get my treatment once every 3 weeks, and I'm at a point now where I don't really experience side effects. I do become a bit run down 2-3 days before my next treatment so I suppose that is a downside.

As always, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Don't be afraid to ask your Dr about any pre-meds you might need, and if your rate of infusion should initially be slow while you adjust to receiving a high dose all at once.
