Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is a group of 20-30 primary immunodeficiencies (PIDs) which have a common set of symptoms but with different underlying causes. CVID's underlying causes are different, but the result of these are that the body doesn't produce sufficient antibodies in response to exposure to pathogens.

Just getting through a second round of intense neck spasms - this one worse than the first.

For the first I went to massage and she told me I had the tightest neck she had ever seen. She worked on me for over an hour - very painful massage ! She pressed and loosened every muscle, ligament, tendon around my neck, up my neck, top of my shoulders, etc. Went to see my GP & he gave me a relaxant to sleep and a prescription anti inflammatory cream.

This one started at 4 am yesterday with no warning & was a pulsing pain - on one side of my neck, top of the shoulders. Tyelnol, ibuprofen, my cream, hot tub, ice, my hubby 'massaging' me twice (ie. painful pressing on the knots & tight spots). A bit better this am - very sore, muscle fatigued.

So the question is - is this related to immune issues at all ? Is this another form of the body attacking itself ? My joints bother me a lot, I am on amoxycillin to knock back yet another infection. Darn it - I'm on holidays !!!!!

Hi Norternelf,

I really have no idea if this could be related to your Immune Disorder, I just wanted to say that I wish you weren't going through all of this on your holiday. CVID has lame timing.

I wondered if you have any Auto Immune disorders as well? I know when my auto immune stuff flares up I can have some pretty serious muscle and joint pain.

I also have the same painful muscles and joints when I am about 5 days out from my next Infusion. So, I don't know if your pain coincides with the timing of your IVIG?

Anyway, I hope you get some relief soon so you can enjoy the rest of your holiday

I am not certain I have CVID at this point. My IgG is low & I have just had the M & A tested but don't know the results (among other things). I am waiting on a referral to a hematologist - so no IVIG at this point. From my reading the joint pain seems to be related to low IgG A or M but who knows. I've seen a rheumie and had RA and other things ruled out.

Anyway....2 massive neck spasms in 4 or 5 months....the spasm is gone, things are a bit sore..but I know the worst is over.

Well, I hope your results come back soon so your Docs can start a treatment plan to reduce or get rid of those neck spasms. They sound very painful.

It sounds like your Dr's are on the right track. I have alot of neck pain, spasms. Mine is due to my fibromyalgia. I use biofreeze, it is a topical cream. That along with a massage usually helps. I also know that I have cervical spinal stenosis as well, however this is also common with fibromyalgia.

I was just going to pipe in with what countr said. I have this issue in my back and neck, and that's due to my fibromyalgia. I usually take cyclobenzaprine and tramadol to do a 1-2 punch to help loosen the muscle and get rid of pain. I also second the biofreeze.
