Honestly, the numbers of folks truly diagnosed with CVID is relatively small. It is considered to be a 'rare' disease despite its name. Probably only one of around 50,000 people. Diagnosis if it does not come while you are very young, we are talking under 3, doesn't usually come until 3rd or 4th decade of life, or like me, not until I was 59!!! Symptoms can be confusing and many doctors are ignorant of the disease itself. I was deathly ill many times, hospitalized and literally at death's door for years before someone finally caught it. It shouldn't be that way, and it isn't always, but you must arm yourself now with knowledge. It sounds like you have found a caring doctor who will listen to you. That's an ACE. In general, most doctors don't like people that they cannot cure. It's true and I understand it.

yes Immune deficiencies are rare..the form I have.. Specific Antibody Deficiency is even rarer..I was not dx until i was 30.

No, it's not new.
Knowing what to look for and DX this issue is likely new or the the clear understanding of this disorder may be somewhat new.

I had this problem as a child without the DX.

I was treated with intermuscular GG when I was younger.
During my teens I was given a shot in each thigh weekly of GG.
I was too skinny to receive it in the bun like most people.
I did this till I was around 20 years old.

Then I returned to this treatment in my early 30's and sometimes received IV injections in the doctors office.
This doc retired and then I went to a new doc.
I was not told it was this DX but he sent me to a hospital out patient for IVIG. I became too allergic and it was discontinued due to the danger of it killing me.

Now days they have much better products and thus much safer.

Now, I take 40mg of Prednisone an hour before treatment.
The infussion center gives me 50mg of IV bennidryl prior to treatment too. Then we wait about 20 minutes after the Bennidryl has taken effect and then the IVIG is started.

I wish doctors had the knowledge they have now and I wish more people who are sick often were tested for this disorder and like disorders of the immune system.

My doctor told me it's been around for a long time, but the instances are dramatically increasing. I was diagnosed about 16 or so years ago and it's gotten progressively worse. I recently filed for and received SSDI, so I wanted to let people know to apply for it early on. I came out of remission 2 years before I knew I could qualify for it.

I was diagnosed in 1980. I had no symptoms, they noticed it when I gave blood. I had heard it is one in 25,000. That is what makes it "common" in medical terms.
