I switched after 6 years of IVIG to Sub Q around a year ago and it has been fairly problem free. You need to see if your dosage is compatible with Sub Q. No port.

I have been getting IV infusions for almost 16 years. About 2 years ago, the veins just wouldn't cooperate anymore. So I got a port in my upper chest, below the clavicle. Best thing I ever did for my disease treatment. It is a great thing for me, may not be so great for others.

I have been on IVIG and SCIG . I had a port for ivig . The port gave me no problems at all and I was quite happy with it . The surgery was a concern as surgery scares me lol but I was very comfortable . No big deal other than an allergy to medical tape . Wish I had done it sooner . It made having IVIG quite easy . No more poke after poke after poke with no success . I have had the port 2 plus years with no issues .

I made the switch to ( cuvitru ) due to side effects from IVIG but the port remains in for blood work. Cuvitru has treated me well , not as many side effects . I go in to have blood work done and port flushed once a month and do my scig at home .

I might mention I have been on subcutaneous for approximately seven months . I find it's easy to do , can fit it in with my schedule and have had very few site reactions . Mostly swelling and redness which quickly disappears the next day . I do have some fluish like symptoms and fatigue a couple days after , but the time spent down is of shorter duration than what the IVIG was ( for me)
We are all different . What works for me may be different for you . It takes patience to find the right fit . Work with your doctor , explain your concerns ... you will find what works for you .

I started getting IVIG in 2008 for an autoimmune condition that is associated with my later-diagnosed CVID. I have terrible veins, and after a year I got an implanted port. It was great, but it was removed in 2011 when my prescribing doc changed and the new one thought I didn't need IVIG. I had no problems with the port and it worked great. For the next 4 years I had horrible pain from the autoimmune condition, and bad frequent infections. The CVID was finally diagnosed in 2015, and I was back on IVIG. It completely controls both conditions, but there is only one nurse who can hit my veins. My immuunologist says that neither she nor any other immunologist at Massachusetts General Hospital, where I get my care, would ever consider allowing me to have a port, since she says the port infection risk is life threatening and too high for anyone with immunodeficiency, given that we can easily go on subcut (SCIG). I truly hate the idea of sticking myself, and the time spent doing weekly infusions, but likely will soon have no choice. Before you get a port, make sure you know and accept the risks that come with it from infections.

I found a recent medical journal report of a big clinical trial that looked at whether primary immunodeficiency patients, including CVID, had higher risk of infection with ports compared to other patients. Did not. I told that to my immunologist and she didn't care. Said she would not allow me to get a port because no risk was worth it since I could just go on SCIG, and it is just my stubbornness that I do not want to.
