so to begin with i just came out to my mom and i wanted to know what all to expect. all my friends know about me and most of my family. it was easy for them, but not for my mom
my mom is really religious and always believed that being gay was a sin. her sister, my aunt, came out as a lesbian 7 years ago. it took my mom 2 years to talk to her.
a few days ago i came out to my mom she started crying and thinks i am crazy. shes starts crying when the subject of me being a lesbian comes up. yesterday she flipped when the word lesbian came up on a song. she seems better, but not really. i feel bad when she cries, but i don't know what to do so i walk away.
i just wanted to know what else to except from coming out

I think its great that you had the courage to come out to your mom. Its a huge step. I think that you should just give her some time to get her thoughts together. I know it may be rough right now but I hope in time she will come around for you and be accepting. Since she already had a sister who is gay, she may be more understanding this time. Most parents dont ever imagine their children coming out to them, so I'm sure its a lot for her to grasp regardless. Just ride the wave, and hope for the best. I'm sending good vibes your way. Good luck and if you ever need someone to talk to, just let me know.

Hi, Ellen! You came out to your mom at the same age I did. Wow, memories! Your mom really seems like she loves you a lot. Otherwise she wouldn't cry at all. It's not easy to do but we have to step back some times and try to view it all as if we were the other person. Like finalstraw said, our parents never expect us to come out gay. They have always dreamed we would grow up and marry the opposite sex, have kids, a dog, white picket fence...etc. It's an adjustment and they need you as much as you need them. And it's actually ok if your mom thinks being gay is a sin because most of us aren't asking for understanding...we're basically just asking that they accept it for what it is. If she believes it's a sin, that's alright because it simply means that it's between you and God. Not her and God or even her and you. She can think it's a sin in the eyes of God and still love you and accept you as a lesbian. My father still thinks of it as a sin to this day but he's come a long way with accepting it. There's a mutual understanding that he and I just agree to disagree on that subject. Also, not sure if you've thought of this but your mom may also be in temporary despair because she's afraid of how the world is going to treat you. My mom cried but not because she really thought it was a sin. She was just scared that the world would chew me up and spit me out. You've started a long but amazing journey. It's ok to feel bad for your mom when she cries but you still have to be you. I really hope at least some of what I've said makes sense and I congratulate you on your courage. Find me here on the site if you want to talk some more.
