Coming Out Support Group
This community is dedicated to the challenges that gay men and lesbian women face, both between the partners in a relationship and from other influences (family, society, etc.). Find support and talk to others who may be facing the same challenges, and share your experience.
I realized that I am gay and not pansexual, and I realized that I might be nonbinary (she/they). Part of me feels like I don't owe anyone a "coming out" debut. To me, sexuality is ever-changing and fluid, and coming out makes me feel like I'm confined to one story. I want the freedom to try on different identities and stick to the ones I best resonate with and live my truth from there.
However, as a lesbian, I'm still trying to untangle myself from my compulsory heterosexuality. I still feel the need to perform to men, and I feel I need to be hyper-feminine to compensate for the fact that I have "failed" to the hetero-binary society. Dating men and playing the role of an interested woman to men feels somewhat like self-harm to me now. It's easier for me to be the object of their gaze than to overcome the overwhelming shame I feel sometimes. So in that regard, I think coming out would be helpful because it might help me let go of shame.
I know this isn't an either-or situation, but I feel these two things:
1) if I don't come out, I am afraid I will only damage myself more by subconsciously conforming to compulsory heterosexuality and allowing men to make moves on me.
2) if I do come out, I am afraid my homophobic relatives will not accept me. I am also afraid I will make a lot of my straight female friends uncomfortable and creeped out. I want to create a safe space for women, but I can't help but feel gross for finding women attractive in a way the male gaze does.
Does anyone have any advice or experience with this? Looking for other lesbian people who have came out/haven't come out.
