I am not understanding why you are taking Ativan because you feel sick? Ativan is an antianxiety type of med and will not help with naseua as far as I know..For that I had a script of compazine..Anyway I looked up many medical and drug questions on www.medlineplus.com My pcp gave me that web site when I was first diagnosed and it answered a lot of questions for me..Hope it helps..Kim

Hi Kim, thanks for responding. I tried the compazine, it made me feel worst and really weird, just couldn't take it. For some reason the Ativan works for me for the nausea. They were giving it to me in the hospital when I had surgery (Jan 09) and I have been taking it ever since, The Dr. says it does help nausea and helps you sleep at night. We're all so different. When I had chemo 12 1/2 years ago, Zofran was the new wonder drug. Compazine was old and cheap and considered not to work as well. But Zofran made me feel awful, and Compazine worked for me. Hubby & I are boaters and we kept some of my left-over Zofran on the sailboat for seasickeness. It worked great for him but not for me. Ativan is an anti-anxiety med but works for nausea for some people. There is a brain-GI connection. I have to say that what made the biggest difference for me was meditation/relaxation tapes. Also making sure to keep hydrated!!

Thanks for your response. Yeah everybody is different, funny how some things work for some and not for others. The Zofran does help me some but doesn't take away the nausea. They want me to only take it the first 3 days. Well I hope this Emend helps cause I'm nauseated all the time, it doesn't go away. The Ativan works the best for me. Thanks and have a great day. g

Good Afternoon -- For my nausea, I receive a drip of Emend and Decadron on Day One of chemo and take Emend pills on day two and three of chemo. In addition, I also take Zofran from day two until I feel better, which is usually three days after the disconnect. I've also tried Preggie Pops (available at Babies R Us), Ginger Root Capsules, acupressure bands and acupuncture.

This is what I found on the Emend website. Makes perfect sense!

Most drugs designed to prevent chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) block the nausea signals from your stomach. But chemotherapy can affect both the stomach and the brain.
