Colorectal cancer, also called colon cancer or bowel cancer, includes cancerous growths in the colon, rectum and appendix. Many colorectal cancers are thought to arise from mushroom-like growths that are usually benign, but some may develop into cancer over time. The majority of the time, the diagnosis of localized colon cancer is through colonoscopy.
Can someone please help by sharing your experience??? My husband had surgery for colon cancer 6 years ago - the left side of his colon was removed and reattached. He is 54. He went a few weeks without taking his laxatives, particularly problematic because he also takes oxycontin for chronic back pain. He has been severely constipated for a month now. His doctor has given him various types of laxatives, all will only work with very large doses and then gives him diarrhea so bad that he can't leave the house. Small doses don't work at all. His mouth dries out really bad - seems to be related to the constipation and not necessarily to the laxatives (strange). Now he is beginning to be low on energy and I am so worried!!! His doctor doesn't seem overly concerned, but my husband seems so sick!!! Two xrays show both the large intestine and small intestine full of stool with gas, but no evident blockage. A colonoscopy is scheduled for tomorrow. He's had two post-diagnosis without recurrance of the cancer.

I was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer 7 years ago and after having three major surgeries, I too was having bowel movement issues. After trying different types of laxatives and diet suggestions, what works best for me is Mirilax. I take a cap-full everyday in a small glass of water and it's been the best solution by far. I eat lots of fruit and veggies ..very little meat and have cut down on dairy too and bread It seems to be working most of the time
