Colorectal cancer, also called colon cancer or bowel cancer, includes cancerous growths in the colon, rectum and appendix. Many colorectal cancers are thought to arise from mushroom-like growths that are usually benign, but some may develop into cancer over time. The majority of the time, the diagnosis of localized colon cancer is through colonoscopy.

It has been exactly 2 years since my chemo ended and I never felt comfortable thinking beyond one day at a time. Then just the other day, without even realizing it, I began calculating how many more years until I can retire. Seems like a normal thought, but not really so normal for someone afraid to think about the future.

Kate...don't let this wretched disease rob you of your dreams!!!!!!!
I can tell you first hand, I'm not. I was 4 1/2 years out and my cancer returned. Going thru cruddy chemo again, but you know what, it's just another day in the life and I'll keep dreaming my dreams and making plans, cause that's what we're supposed to do!!! My biggest fear for 4 + years was it coming back, so it did, But that fear is now laid to rest and I'll do what I have to do and go on from here.

Wow, that is so totally true. I am into year nine post chemo/surgery and I don't think much anymore of how intense the 'trauma' was that came very close to ending my life. For so many years I was aware of how this illness impacted my life as my husband died during my final week of chemotherapy and I had already been coping with an unrelated disabling illness for the previous six years and with his death I was alone and faced the new issues of trying to survive without his income. Just getting the Disabled Window's Benefits started was such an unreal nightmare. Today I am focused on hanging on to life with a disabling illness with only disability benefits to sustain me but I rarely even think of 'cancer' any longer except when it comes to follow up appointments and exams. I have not given it much thought until reading your post. Life grabs us by the hand and moves us forward. I guess it did the same for us when cancer struck us also.

well done you!! try and keep thinking like this Kate, it is the way forward, Way i try and look at it is, yes, cancer will always be part of me but it wont define me. I was like you, scared to think of the future, i used to think i was tempting fate, but now i think, i'm only here once and gonna live life to the full, it may come back and if it does will deal with it as and when needed but until then, i'm gonna live my life to the full and as for cancer UP YOURS!!!! ive beaten you once and can do so again
