How to tell? You mentioned a counselor. Tell him/her that you need that person to help you break the news to him.

The downside is my dad never did get it together and passed away at 58 years old about ten years after they split. I wanted him to make it but he never really could admit he had a drinking problem.
You're not responsible for his behavior.
I think that using the counselor is a great suggestion......but the kids must already see things headed in that direction anyway.
Kids are resilient as long as the parents stay honest thru the experience and talk about it, and support them, get them into the counseling as well.....
