A codependent person may try to change, or feel shame about their most private thoughts and feelings if they conflict with the other person's struggles. One of the concepts talked about in the book is the concept of a "keystone" habit. The habit that if you could change it, could open you up to changing tons of things in your life. In one of the examples in the book, a woman gave up smoking to go on a trip. Changing that habit allowed her to completely change her life. She got her health under control, she held down a job for over 4 years and still counting, and got her finances under control.
Some of these habits are so ingrained into ourselves that we don't even realize we do them. In fact, in one study they looked at a guy who had serious damage to his memory (anything further out then 20 seconds couldn't be remembered) but was able to leave the house walk around the block and find his way back to his house even though his memory was gone and if asked, he couldn't figure out how to leave the room! Habits are formed at a deep level in the brain.
Not sure if it will apply to you, but it certainly gave me something to think about.
And lastly, good for you. I think setting a meaningful goal for yourself is important. Stick with it! You can do it!!
