Codependency Support Group
Codependency is defined as someone who exhibits too much, and often inappropriate, caring for another person's struggles. A codependent person may try to change, or feel shame about their most private thoughts and feelings if they conflict with the other person's struggles. If you are on a journey towards self-love, this support group is for you. Join us and find others...
I am new to this group so I searched and saw this old unanswered posting from March.
My answer is that it appears that you already know the problem and you know the solution but you simply do not do as you know.
Of course you can stay friends with this friend, because being just friends is the healthy way, and by being clingy or emotionally dependent then that is crossing the boundary line by being some thing beyond (violating) being friends.
There is never any reason to cut off a friend, but enforce the boundary between friends is always the healthy way.
Here is a link on the subject of boundaries which I like:

What gets to me in your OP is that you clearly see and recognize the problems and the dysfunctions, and you appear to know the answers already to all of your questions - but then you do not do as you say, and do not do as you know to do.
There is no real reason to ask your Therapist either = because you already know.
I see the real deep problem is that you do not want to make your own decisions for your self, which is a super big aspect of being codependent, because a codependent person is afraid that they might have to take care of them self.
It is really a control tactic because if you let other people make your decisions then you can blame other people instead of taking responsibility for your own life decisions.
Since you already know what to do - so just decide for your self to do it - and then start living by your own decisions.
This is just my opinion, based on my own study and experience.
There is a phenomenon called = the Peter Pan syndrome.
That is when a person simply refuses to grow up, as said by Peter Pan = "I am not going to grow up and no one can make me grow up."
And it is not really referring to young children but to adults who continue to act as if they are young children and never accept their role as an adult.
This is an aspect of codependency because the grown child still fears adults or does not trust adults and rebel against authority.
It is an act of defiance by refusing to grow up and accept their own responsibilities.
A healthy young child is excited to grow up and to mature because they look forward to a better life of adventures.
Just saying here.
