Codependency Support Group
Codependency is defined as someone who exhibits too much, and often inappropriate, caring for another person's struggles. A codependent person may try to change, or feel shame about their most private thoughts and feelings if they conflict with the other person's struggles. If you are on a journey towards self-love, this support group is for you. Join us and find others...

I just want to throw something out there that helped me to begin taking care of myself. I'm reading so many posts that remind me of me. I could write each person individually and tell them all the same thing about Self Care, Self Care, Self Care. I still have a long way to go, but I am come sooooo far! I have a co-worker and we are both enablers to each other in a way. We both have through the years, spent so much time talking about what we want to do for ourselves, but never did. Always ended up, being in a rut with someone else's garbage. Both of us decided to go to our own therapists. As we started to build on this new "do attitude", it was almost laughable. One issue we have in common is, neither one of us is extremely overweight, but we weren't happy with our current situation. We would discuss over and over again, over cookies and lunch about what we plan to do tomorrow (which seemed like it would never come). :-)
One day, she came to me and told me about an article a friend of hers mentioned. The article showed the difference between a selfish person (I choose to call the pyschopath) and the not at all selfish person (I choose to call the codependent). They did a study and it showed, the selfish person, is the person who has the body we only hoped we could get. The selfish person would dump their problems on us and leave us to listen, internalize and go eat on that emotion. Once the selfish person has dumped on us, that person is going to take care of themselves. That person is going to take care of themselves. That person is going to go in the gym, eat the good stuff, shop, go out, _____________ (you fill in the blank). We are going to eat, live in unwanted weight, obsess, come up with solutions to help that person and whatever else they need, while neglecting ourselves just to feel needed.
This is one thing that has stuck with me and helped me change. I started to think of what it would be like to be selfish, even if it's just once. What if I put my need first and did or did not do something, just because that's what I want. It took a lot of hard work and deprogramming, but I am a little selfish now. Not like a pyschopath, but I am selfish in a self-care kind of way.
If anyone is struggling right now in their codependency and full of fear, I want to offer you a "friendly challenge". I dare you to do one selfish act to take care of yourself. I dare you to say no when you really want to. I dare you to say yes, when you really want to. I dare you to do one nice thing for you! Not for anybody else, but just for you because that's what you really want.
I'm talking baby steps. I am not aksing anyone to go bunjee jumping. :-) I want you to do one small things (hopefully it's more than one). I want you to tell someone, I can't right now and go for a walk and really enjoy the fresh air (stuff like that), or have that cookie just because you want to. Forget about other people for 2 minutes and act on impulse. I really love you all and I don't even know you. I just know we all live so much in our heads and I want us all to win! My therapist challenged me and now I challenge myself. I just want to challenge you and hopefully it will spark something in you.

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper? Im ready to start...
Just perfect, your post is wonderful. I have to say we are on the same page...the same journey and I too am taking baby steps for some time now. It started almost 4 years ago and my steps are getting bigger and better. Sometimes I get stuck for awhile but not for too long. I take time each day to take care of me. I get my hair done, take care of my skin and actually put on a bit of make up when I go out. I have lost over 130 lbs and have taken my time doing that. It feels strange to fit into clothes from over a decade ago and to have old clothes fall off or hang on me. My biggest most immediate drop in weight was 185lbs...my husband. I just packed him up and moved him out 2 years ago now. Just giving up on my addict husband was a great help in healing. Not saying it was easy but loving him was killing me. He very much fits the selfish psychopath profile. He loved me like crazy...crazy being the operative word. I was merely one of his many addictions. Your post has sparked something else important in me that I have been neglecting. My writing and my painting. I have a wall of paintings that relate and connect to each other like a story. Only one out of 6 painting is actually finished, the other 5 are close but I have just sat there looking at them doing nothing. Today I shall have some fun painting. I also love sunflowers and have a large sunflower and tiger lily painting in my kitchen that is also unfinished...so thank you for the inspiration and the spark!..big hugs to you too...xoooo darcy
Sometimes I forget to remind myself of this, so thank you for doing it for me! I think I am going to treat myself to get my nails done after work actually :)
xx
Darcy that is awesome that you lost so much weight! Bravo!!! Standing Ovation! I now publicly challenge you to complete those 5 paintings, but for you, on your terms. :-). I would love it if you share them in your profile when done. I bet we are all so talented in so many ways and never fully use our gifts, because we're focusing on those that are undeserving. You go girl!
Daisy I would love a mani right now too. I'm going for it Saturday morning. Haven't pampered myself in that way for almost a year. So thank you for the reminder. I challenge you, when they show you the next new fad that will make your hands soft as a baby's bottom for an additional 5 bucks, to go for it. :-). You so deserve it! Hugs
You see, in your little essay, you used the label "selfish" and "codependent", and it almost sounded if neither of these types of persons were good; in fact it sounded like they were both flawed people, but in the end, you decided "Hey! Just for once I want to be selfish, too!"
Maybe it's not such a character flaw.
I come from the standpoint that there are all times we need to be selfish, and we also need to be co-dependent. There are times we need to help others, and there are times we need to take help from other people. That's what I think of when I hear the word "co-dependency" - that we all need each other; that we all rely on each other.
