Codependency Support Group
Codependency is defined as someone who exhibits too much, and often inappropriate, caring for another person's struggles. A codependent person may try to change, or feel shame about their most private thoughts and feelings if they conflict with the other person's struggles. If you are on a journey towards self-love, this support group is for you. Join us and find others...
Firstly thank you for taking the time to listen to what I have to say, it means a lot to me.
Before I get into the things that are troubling me, which I have a deep need for empathy for, I want to let you know what kind of empathy I receive best. I'd like you to reflect back what you heard me say, the feelings and needs you hear within me. Please don't offer me any advice without asking first, it would be best for me to just know that you care enough to show me you understand what I'm going through.
I recently realized myself as a person who fit very neatly under the label "codependant." All my life I have been aiming to please, and denying my own needs, disrespecting them, in fear of what others might think about me. I've recently woken up to the old wisdom of "sticks and stones can break my bones, but words will never hurt me," and am in the process of great healing, and rediscovering the joy of being alive.
So, when I'm meeting my needs throughout the day, I am happy.
One need I am not meeting though is the need to mourn, and I can feel it, like a knot in my chest.
I feel scared, and sad to acknowledge that in my childhood, I went through a lot of trauma. Even now as I write this, I can hear my co-dependant inner critic telling me "it wasn't that bad," "why would anyone care that you didn't get enough love as a child," "other people were beaten, or had it far worse off then you." This is at the heart of my struggle to find self esteem, and self worth once again.
I guess I'm worried of what you might think when you read this, like a fear that if you were that person who had it worse off, and you compared me to yourself, you would hate me for taking up space on the message board...
However, some part of me has found newfound hope in people's capacity for compassion and empathy. I think I have realized that it's not about the problem, but the pain, the suffering. We connect to what is alive in people, and what is alive in me right now is a lot of hurt, a lot of sadness, anger, and emptiness.
It's a hole inside of me, that I feel I can never fill. Like a missing piece to a jigsaw puzzle that was lost with my childhood. I am trying to sense where it all started. I feel as though I was very very young, and I wanted to give my mom something special I had made for her, to show her how much I loved her. I think I remember walking into her office, she was working, but I, being a child, was completely oblivious. She was a single mom, and worked very hard. I offered her the gift, and instead of the joy that I feel every child deserves the opportunity to enjoy in love, she screamed at me. "JESSE! I'M TRYING TO WORK! LEAVE ME ALONE!" I felt terrified, my needs for safety, for love, for care, were all completely violated by the person I counted on the most in life. I cried, and cried, and she continued to glare at me, sigh angrily, act annoyed. This is when I first learned to 'turn off' my emotions. I became a very "good boy," at the tragic cost of my ability to connect with my emotions in a way that felt safe.
And now, here I am. I know I need to mourn all of this past trauma, but I don't know how. It's like I'm standing at the top of a very high clifftop, looking out over the ocean. The ocean represents all of the sadness I have supressed. I know I need to get in the water, to learn how to swim, but I have no way of reaching the ocean without diving in. I'm in dire need of understanding and empathy, any you could provide would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you, and may you find joy in this day - Jesse

Ever since I stopped doing therapy because of insurance, I've been feeling that old tense and irritable sense of anxiety and stress. I hate that. I was making so many strides and changes during therapy, my therapist would acknowledge all of my progress and accomplishments, and I miss that reassurance. Today I thought about it, and I made those changes! She would always tell me that I chose to...

I had a similar childhood, and in my case, it was the silence and shame of multigenerational alcoholism that caused it (my mom is an ACoA). My therapist says our personalities are largely established between ages 4-12, so if you didn't feel safe, seen, and accepted at those ages, it can lead to codependency, people pleasing, intimacy issues, etc.
I think it was Darlene Lancer's book Conquering Shame and Codependency that covered how to approach the feeling of a void, like the ocean of sadness you describe.
When I read the limitations the poster placed on our replies, in the first section, I thought, well, maybe I can identify and it turned out to be a healing experience for me. I went back to my own childhood when I was around 4 or 5 years old and I remember my parents gave me a ball and glove for my birthday! I asked my dad to play catch with me. Being so young, I could not catch the ball very well when he threw it to me so I ended up chasing after it most of the time. I think I had a fear that it might hurt me, for some reason but I kept telling myself to be brave and catch it so I finally caught it and I was so happy I wanted to continue playing but dad wanted to go inside as it was getting dark. The following night I asked him again to play catch with me but he didn't want to. in fact, he always came up with an excuse and he never played catch with me again.
I was feeling very hurt and angry toward my dad for neglecting me. Although he is no longer here, I imagined him standing in front of me and I told him I forgive him for not wanting to play catch with me for all the times I asked him and he said no and had an excuse. I said it's ok, I forgive you and I forgive myself for the anger and resentment I felt toward you. I said, I forgive you for what you did and I forgive you for what you did not do!
In an instant, I felt like a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders and the empty space inside was quickly filled in! I felt a connection to something that was greater then myself. I was finally at peace!
Thankyou for posting this because you helped make my life better!
God Bless!
@mlr0853 I'm grateful for you sharing your insecurities, it's hard to receive help when it feels like it's being forced down your throat.
Can someone please read my message, and just simply tell me what they hear me feeling and needing. Nothing more, no solutions, just "I'm here, and I'm hearing and understanding what you're going through." I would be SO appreciative of that, and it would help me to release a lot of tension.
I spent a long time writing my post, with the intention to Not Give Advice, to come from a place of my own experience based on what I read, interpreted by your words: re: feelings of sadness. Perhaps another area is the feelings you are experiencing are so stuffed down you don't know what they "actually are", or represent, therefore the FEAR of what you might uncover. A grieving process, of what was lost, or never had to begin with that you may have needed from significant others....I hope this post is more helpful to you as you process...the 5 W's and the infamous "It's" and a journal are a never ending source of information, from my perspective to learn what I'm feeling.
Think or want away. It will not get better by just thinking
About it.
Its a sign of strength when you reach out for loving
Caring support. When i arrived at the doors of alanon
I was on my knees begging for help. Many of us need
To bottom out before we are humble enough to accept
The help we truly need. When we are humble we are
Teachable.
None Of the old tapes just disappear because we analyze
Them. Go to a therapist, go to CODA meetings begin your
Own Healing journey. It is a deep long process. HUGS
God Bless!
Firstly, thank you for sharing such an intimate topic about yourself. I am hearing that you feel a lot of pain, sadness, anger, and fear right now, because of how your mother didn't meet your needs for love and affection when you were young, and would like some understanding for how hard that is for you to endure. Is that accurate?
