My heart aches for your troubles, especially the feeling of aloneness you speak of. I would not take "you will die from this" as the bottom line. There is much to do to combat bacterial infections. One thing you might want to suggest is that the doctors look at whether or not you have a silent infection in another area of your body; This will cause repeated spontaneous infections without proper and direct treatment of the cause, i.e. another infection somewhere.

Antibiotics these days are "target" drugs insomuch as they can be prescribed for one affliction yet a different drug might be needed for yet another infection. Broad spectrum antibiotics come to mind in particular.

Ask the possibility of having a regimine of antibiotics ongoing for a while. All doctor prescribed, of course as using incorrect doseages as antibiotics can cause a lot of different dangers over and above what you are trying to treat if not taken exact. Yeast infections (yes, yeast infections in men as well as women) are a problem when using antibiotics for a while as is a bowel condition called Clostridium Difficile (C Dif). I had that twice and thought I would surely die from it. It literally consumes the lining of the colon and causes you a severe bowel problem. (Granted, the bacteria that causes C Dif is found in everyone in one area or other but it is when the Clostridium Dificile overtakes the good flora (bacterial) within your digestive tract that is the problem. This sort of infection is very common in institutional situations such as hospital visits and nursing homes where poor hand washing practices leads to cross contamination one to another.

I am assuming that you have liver disease as this is the support forum for cirrhosis. That said, I surely hope that you can get over the feeling of being alone. Our "family" here on this site is a very compassionate bunch and I know that I, for one, have found answers to problems as well as a source for strength and togetherness. We are sort of "all in this boat together"................

I will surely pray for you and will add you to my ever growing list at my church. We have a large prayer group who takes prayer very seriously and for good reason..........prayer works. In a relationship with Christ, one is never really alone.

While we can't answer all the questions asked on this site, we can offer sometimes a different perspective or offer a word of advice that might help that maybe we had not thought of before. I hope that will be the case for you.

My husband has not gotten it. He was sick and running a fever back when his ascites was really bad and he looked 9 months pregnant.

They admitted him to the hospital and tested the fluids they drained for SBP. It was negative.

However, it did not stop the hospital from sending an intectious disease control doctor to our room with a mask on the whole time talking to us. Talk about feeling isolated! We felt like Darth Vader was talking to us! And the bill-that is another story.

You are not alone. It can happen but there are things that can be done to help. Keep your spirits up and remain optimistic. It is a proven fact that having positive outlook increases your healing. Doctors are not God and they are NOTORIOUS for giving DOOM and GLOOM speeches!

Check out other liver disease support sites. I am sure that there are others out there who have been through it and are doing well. Craig's site was one support place that I enjoyed visiting and getting information.

My Sis is just moving to rehab after over a month in the hospital! She had Spontaneous Bacterial Peritonitis but it is gone now, thank God!
Im with Kacc on this, doctors are a lot of doom and gloom but are sometimes wrong as in my Sis's case, they said she would not live through it but she certainly is!
It is scary but try to keep your chin up the best you can.

My husband had SBP in September. I came home and he had a fever and abdominal pain. He just wanted to sleep and didn't want to go to the hospital. I finally convinced him and told the doctors what I thought it was. They tested and he did have SBP. They started antibiotics and admitted him. Within 8 hours he was in ICU with sepsis. They airlifted him to our transplant hospital in Dallas. It was scariest day of my life. After a few days in ICU And a few more in the hospital, they finally discharged him. He was on the transplant list already. His MELD went way up during this time. The doctors told us if I had let him sleep, he would have been dead within 12 hours. I am so thankful. He pulled through. He got his liver transplant October 25th. It was a long haul though. He spent two months in the hospital after transplant for various complications, but our new liver worked great the whole time. He dropped to 98 lbs by the time we got home at Christmas. He's now back up to 126. Still a ways to go, but life almost back to pre sick days!! I am so grateful for the donor and family. I pray for them every day. My husband and I have such a new appreciation of life. Thanks to the donor, he has been able to welcome two new grandsons this year and we both feel blessed that he was able to still be here to meet than and watch them grow.

Bottom line:: this is a very serious infection. You must take it seriously and take all your meds. But, you can make it out the other side. I will ray for you. Pm me if you want more info. Thanks.
