Hello ALL! I am just a concerned daughter of a Mom who is now suffering from cirrhosis after many years of struggling with "Auto-Immune Liver Disease". She is 78 yrs "young" and my very best friend and is just a very upbeat person! She also is a breast cancer and colon cancer survivior! :o) My question is this...were any of you dx with the auto-immune disorder b/4 cirrhosis? She has been living with this since 90' and is now recieving blood and iron transfusions as her liver is not filtering the blood properly. Again, just wondering if anyone is dealing with this??? The only med she is on is 5 mg prednisone. She was on Methotrexate for a number of years and I hear this is hard on the liver??? The combo of this and the prednisone was suppose to keep her liver quieted down and not fight so hard. She says she will never do a transplant due to her age....I just wondered if any of you can tell me if you are having any of these problems and what to expect??? They have never given her any reason why she developed this auto-immune disorder. She has never been a drinker and I know when you tell someone my Mom has cirrohsis~~~~~they automatically think...alcoholic! :o( I feel heartache for all of you dealing with a liver condition and would sure love any responses to my questions. My cirrhosis is from drinking and probably a good protion here are.. however, anyway you can get Hep C, i.e. blood transfusion, blood to blood contact etc. can always lead to cirrhosis. Have you searched the internet under auto immune cirrhosis.. I just did and there are many reliable sources from which to read from. Getting it from someone who has it though, is always better than reading from "book smart". I was just wondering if any of you are having to recieve blood transfusions because of cirrhosis? She is getting both blood and iron transfusions due to her blood not filtering properly. She is slowing losing blood (Dr figures from her colon)!
I just hope she can keep doing this....as this seems to be her anchor for holding on as long as possible. Otherwise, she is always happy and positive. Her energy level is the only thing that seems to be affected at this time. No acites or the other problems associated with this disease.

I hope your mother will heal and I do pray God's best for you and your family. I do miss my mom. Just be thankful for your time with her; I took mine for granted with my mother. And hug her and tell her you love her. I'm sure you do all that!! Take care, and Merry Christmas!! to you and your mom.
Autoimmune liver disease is not very common from what I've researched. When my son was being diagnosed for his condition they had thought he had autoimmune liver disease, but the results were inconclusive because not all the markers from tests could actually confirm this was his cause. So he is labelled as cryptogenic or cirrhosis with no known cause. I know that there are people out there that have it... its just hard to connect with them. I had gone on the canadian liver assn site and did find a lady who was diagnosed with autoimmune liver disease. If that helps any maybe try searching there?

I am sorry to hear about your mom Tory. That must be hard for you but sounds like she has alot of great support and people that care about her. My cirrhosis came from drinking unfortunately. I could not tolerate prednisone it caused an pyschotic break in me. I am told that might have been because of the dosage I received. I am not sure how much 5mg is. I wish the best with your Mom and I hope you find the answers you need. I wish I knew more about auto immune disorder to help you out.
