Hi......You can be on the transplant watch list at your facility or hospital when you are first diagnosed as End Stage Liver Disease. That is what the MELD score stands for....But, your MELD sore has to be quite high to be considered on the "actively seeking" list. You can have a transplant if you have a living donor or someone you know who are a match for you and who is healthy, pretty much anytime after diagnosis. Your insurance covers live donors as well as the other transplant donors (cadaver).

The MELD score gage is usually consistent across the board and there have been patients in the high 20's who still don't get a liver right away. I think that anything above 17 is considered ready once a liver is found but there have also been patients who have had MELDs in the 30's and 40's who are still waiting although considered much more urgent that the lower scores.

Your MELD score can be determined by locating your Biliruben, Creatinen and INR numbers and google search MELD Calculator and they have a formula for finding your MELD using those numbers. Mine is still consistently 10 so although I have been considered end stage for lots of years and have had decompensation of liver several times, I am still not ready to be considered as "actively seeking a donor liver after 9 years into this disease. I have refused to allow my children to become a live donor for me although they would willingly......I told them that if I reach the point of dying with no other liver available then the decision to become live donor is up to them. But, I hope it never comes to that. I couldn't live nor would I want to go on should I have my life spared but lose a child
who chose to be a donor for me. I just couldn't do it.

The Lord is good.......I am proof as He has seen me through many tough times in my 63 years so I know that I will be taken care of according to His will and for His glory.
