Tried Xifaxan for about six weeks, pretty decent, but incredibly expensive. Will probably get on a supplemental Medicare plan if I can find one reasonable enough and cover Xifaxan.
I've still got 5 1/2 pints of lactulose from last spring. I hate it and just flat out refuse to take it. Horrible going in, even worse coming out.
No constipation problems, but just wonder how stool softeners would work eliminating ammonia.
BUT I have been told by someone that there is a great sub for the lactulose called Kristalose. It comes in little packets with 20mg of lactulose in each package. If you mix with water you can barely tell its there. If mixed with a flavore drink you can't tell it's there at all. And you don't get that thick syrupy sweetness like with the lactulose. It's made by Cumberland pharmacy or distributes whatever... it's a little bit more expensive, but this person has been using it for 4+ years and has had no problems. I am going to try it. After finding out how much "a little more expensive" really is. lol because I cannot stand lactulose. I guess that is what I've picked out of this whole situation to be a big weenie about. go figure. lol
