Cirrhosis Support Group
Cirrhosis is a consequence of chronic liver disease, most commonly caused by alcoholism and hepatitis C. Ascites is the most common complication of cirrhosis and is associated with a poor quality of life, increased risk of infections, and a poor long term outcome. Liver damage from cirrhosis cannot be reversed, but treatment can stop or delay further progression and...
There are many causes of peritonitis in liver disease patients but ascites is the most common reason. When the fluid in the abdomen gets infected for some reason then, they have to drain the fluid pronto and get the patient on antibiotics. If ascites continues to come back
(as it usually does) then there is always a possiblility of recurrence in the peritonitis problem but it doesn't automatically mean that it will always come back. My mother had peritonitis from a blood infection caused from bronchitis/pneumonia. Unfortunately, she didn't make it but that had a different cause than say peritonitis from infected ascites. Once again, there is no
"one size fits all" with cirrhosis so each patient will not always react the same as the other..........Hope this helps........

2 weeks in Hospital
Has not returned I quit Drinking and eating junk food
My Mother had peritonitis back in the early 1990's and almost died. She was one to put off going to the doctor until she couldn't put it off any longer.........as was the case that first time. Only that time, we got her to the hospital in time to save her life. She was told to never allow herself to get sick and "ignore" it again. We thought she had learned her lesson but, in 1995, she got sick again with bronchitis that went into pneumonia. We tried to get her to listen to reason and see the doctor but she put it off saying she was feeling better everyday. Well, you guessed it......she was not recovering but developing more and more infection that went into her major internal organs and then into the bloodstream and she didn't make it. I sat with her for 4 days and nights while they tried to keep her alive hoping the cocktail of antibiotics they were giving her would somehow bring her out of it again. But, that was not to be. The fluids they were giving her IV for the 104 degree fever were not going through the kidneys but were backing up in the tissue of her body and this 130 pound woman weighed almost 300 pounds the day she died.
I can't impress upon friends and family enough to never, never allow yourself to think that you can beat it yourself. Get immediate medical help. The worst that could happen is that you would turn out not to be as sick as you thought you might be, after all. What a blessing that would have been in the case of my Mom.
There isn't a day that I don't think of her and wonder what life would have been like to be able to share my now adult children and also my grandkids. She missed so much that she had spent a lifetime
looking forward to. So sad.
If my little story here makes the difference to only one person and causes that person to seek out help first and ask questions later.....then it was well worth sharing, painful as it is.
