Physicians and professionalsdefine pain as chronic if it lasts longer than three to six months and is persistent. It's distinct from acute pain that is a direct result of injury or trauma. This support group is dedicated to those suffering from chronic pain. Discuss treatments that have worked for you, find advice for your specific experience, and find support. You're not...
My mother had epilepsy, my older sister had epilepsy, died when I was 13, she had a seizure in the bathtub and drowned. I have a Seizure Disorder with Grand Mal Seizures, Absence Seizures and weird amnesiac dream state things that don't fit into a category. I'm a Chronic Pain Patient, I have been since I was 17, but from a Degenerative Cartilage Disease that affects all of my joints, Advanced Osteoarthritis and back issues from breaking 2 vertebrae.
In the 18 years since the Seizure Disorder was Diagnosed, I've also been Diagnosed with Peripheral Neuropathy (Nerve Pain) but never had an injury that would cause it. Its a secondary diagnosis of repeated Grand Mal Seizures over a long time period. In the last 5 years or so I also have all over body pain, that really doesn't have a reason to be. I'm not the most active person in the world. I can walk, I can do PT in a pool only, and my main "activity" is gardening, that's my limit. I stay active enough to keep my joints "moving" and my body healthy but not enough to cause the amount of all over body pain that I have each day. Seizures beat up the body and it takes its toll.
Personally, if a Dr. tried to put a Fibro DX on me, I'd disregard it.
As for why so many people suffer from pain these days.....I think many people mistake "Acute Pain" from "Chronic Pain". Post-op pain, injury pain, all types of Acute Pain, people expect to be given meds to make every single bit of that pain go away until its completely gone.....drugs for weeks to months when in reality it should be days if at all. We live in a world of quick fixes and instant gratification, if somethings wrong we expect there to be a fix for it, Now! People have pain, they always have, the body is not a piece of wood when your active and you do things it's going to hurt sometimes, you may have injuries at times. Every time you have pain it doesn't mean something is drastically wrong and you need $1000's of dollars worth of testing and drugs to make it go away. Back when we were kids, adults worked hard, if they pulled a muscle or had tennis elbow, they put a heating pad or ice on it, took an aspirin and went on with life.
Even those of us who've had Chronic Pain for long time periods fall into that place where we forget that not every little twitch needs to be medicated and eradicated, sometimes a headache is just a headache.
