Chronic Pain Support Group
Physicians and professionalsdefine pain as chronic if it lasts longer than three to six months and is persistent. It's distinct from acute pain that is a direct result of injury or trauma. This support group is dedicated to those suffering from chronic pain. Discuss treatments that have worked for you, find advice for your specific experience, and find support. You're not...
Lots of good points being made.
Guess it won't surprise anyone that I see all sides of this..as most..questions.
My concerns don't stem from the sharing of informed information.
More from how that information is sometimes presented as fact..when it is conjecture.
Or, from the sharing of misinformation.
It's certainly true that folks have a personal responsibility to investigat for themselves advice they take from here. Just as I feel we should, even when it's from our Docs.
We are..ultimately responsible for our care.
And..for advocating for ourselves for that care.
I appreciate everyone talking about this without rancor..
To me..that's a support board working as it should.
Hugs.....jc
i've made mistakes in advice. i just haven't done it on purpose, you know.
i'm not perfect, but most doctors aren't either. i'm for the most information all of the time in any situation and it doesn't bother me if i hear an urban legend or incorrectly repeated factoid, because i'm learning. i'm learning all the time, we all are.
no one could ever force me to try to make my own scs, perform home surgery and plug myself in... you know??
but there is a fine line that DS doesn't cover in large print here. i just like to think we're more smart than uh.. the opposite.

Well said, Yolkyjen...more smart than the, uh..opposite
Is what all the best folks are...:-) :-) :-)
The often used statement " always consult your doctor first" puts the responsibility on them as it should be. There is no way to be sure about some people.
If I knew for certain misinformation was posted, I would worry about it and would have to say something. I wouldn't feel comfortable letting wrong info sit on the thread.

We have first hand experience that others may not have and doctors may not be aware of - sharing that is one thing. Telling others off when they share from personal experience is -in my opinion - WRONG.
Arguging with others for the direction a thread is going is wrong.
Telling others off for their personal experience is wrong.
That is just my opion. Others may have opinions that differ from mine. They should consider their own bodies and reactions to reading when judging the veractiy of opinions.
i came to this room looking for understanding and help to get answers and i've gotten alot of both. i can judge for myself what i want to take and what not to, i've been at this a long time.
some of these newbies and younger ppl have not.
just my opinion :)
I've found the advice I've received here (for the most part) has been helpful, whether it's the experiences you've had with a drug, or the success rate of a procedure. I gather all the answers I get and take them to my doctor and he and I make the decision we feel is right for me. Knowing all the options helps make informed decisions.
I think it's the responsibility of each of us to investigate further any ideas the group comes up with. For example, I asked about SCS. I took all the opinions and went back to the internet to explore it further. I now feel that I can make an educated decision about it.
I sometimes refer someone to a website about lupus or IC. If they want to explore the topic further, they can. If not, then maybe it will help someone else who is at a lost about their symptoms.
Good topic jc!
Sandy
As for giving opinions, sometimes strong wording is what it takes to get a point across. (Underlying cause is everything.) As long as it doesn't endanger or attempt to override a doctor's authority....
If DS doesn't want members giving each other medical advice, then this site is mostly worthless, in my opinion. I hope the legal disclaimer is more about the content DS itself creates.
