As a needle phobe it's hard enough, but I'm phobic about hospitals, doctors, ANY medical tool & especially, surgery, so tomorrow's kidney lithotripsy is scaring the crap out of me. I've postponed it since December, and the huge stone they're going after in my right kidney IS a bit of a rock to bear, but damn, I am SCARED!
I know it's routine to have to read & sign the "what could happen" list, but now I'm even more frightened. I have a 4 yr old son and I want to see him grow up. If I do NOT have the surgery I risk this humongous stone dropping & being way to big to pass. It would cause BIG problems and I'd be hospitalized anyway. If I DO have it, they could miss the stone, cause kidney bleeding, kidney damage, etc. The list is too long to write up.
My big fear came from the observation of the CT Scan of my kidneys. When a doctor isn't sure where to "Start" b/c you have so many stones in both kidneys, you know you're going to go through this several times.
I'm also scared of the aftermath, which I heard is the hard part. There will be no stent like other people get, but I'm told that the days after the procedure will be "difficult".
Everyone I know who has had this procedure has either been hospitalized after, or had a stent. I don't know what to think. Then there's the pain aspect. I already take oral morphine for RSD. I've had it for 17 years. What if they can't handle my pain?
Okay, I AM freaking out. But I don't DO hospitals. I haven't had anything done since 2004. I'm shaking like a leaf.
Needless to say, prayers are appreciated. I go in at 820am eastern, then have the procedure some time after that. My DH & I have TRIED to explain this to our son, but at 4 he thinks I'm getting "cut" to get those pesky stones out. He keeps saying, "Don't let doctor do that! Please!"
How do I get through tonight? And what about my meds? I can drink a little water with them up to 4 hours before, so I'll be due for one just as I arrive. So much to worry about. And this time tomorrow it'll be over. I just home I am not over! How embarrassing to die in kidney stone surgery. Yes, unlikely.

My poor son doesn't get why Mommy can't cuddle or he can't touch me. I'm on my normal pain meds plus toradol and flomax. I slept most of the day after getting home. I'm supposed to strain all urine for pieces of the stone but so far nothing.
I ALMOST think they should keep people who've done this overnight, but I would've had a fit if they'd suggested it. Basically I feel like...I had surgery. It hurts, I'm sick, and it'll get better.
Thanks everyone- in a few days I'm sure I'll be back to normal. Right now I just want to lay down and not move.
I have a fear of dentists, so I know what that fear is like. I'm sorry you have it and I pray that everything went well with your surgery today.
